Youngsters from the fi rst through fi fth grade classes participated in “Field Trip Zoom,” a series of interactive s kids & education learning adventures with the Ann Arbor Museum in Michigan, the Alaska Sea Life Center and Seven Hills in Australia. Using a smartboard and a web camera, the students met with tour guides who showed points of interest at each destination and participated in various demonstrations and lessons. During the Seven Hills lesson, they worked with Australian counterparts on chemistry experiments. “I loved the trip because the guy told us that if you put particles together or spread out, it’s still the same. I learned that in Australia the dates are different. For example, here it’s June 17th, 2015, but in Australia, it’s June 18th, 2015,” said fifth-grader Fardeen Salla. After participating in a trip to the Alaska Sea Life Center, second-grader Karen Paniagua, wrote, “When we went to Alaska, I learned that sea otters have adaptations to help them to survive.” Second and third grade students were able to make a clay sea otter with the help of their tour guide, Darin, after touring the Alaska Sea Life Center in Students are pictured participating in a Field Trip Zoom lesson. Seward, Alaska and learning about adaptations. The teachers at St. Thomas the Apostle were just as impressed as the students with each lesson. “Students were able to see and learn about chemistry demonstrations that otherwise would not have been possible in the classroom,” said science teacher Ryan Matruski. “It also gave them a chance to interact and meet a professional in a science career field in Australia, who presented the trip in a very age-appropriate manner. Overall, students, as well as myself, were very excited and eager to participate in the virtual trip Photos courtesy of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Academy and they expressed interest in doing it again.” Second Grade teacher, Patricia Eggers, believes that the students are doubly excited to participate in these virtual field trips. “Kids are always excited to go on a field trip to begin with,” she said. “When we pre-teach the lessons about where they will be visiting and show them on the map how far away they will be travelling, it adds a whole new level of excitement. The funniest part was when they told their parents where they were going on their field trip, they’re parents didn’t believe them.” JOB 019-AD QUEENS COURIER 8.75 X 5.6875 LIU POST’S CENTER FOR GIFTED YOUTH SUMMER 2015 PROGRAM July 6-30, 2015 • CELEBRATING 35 YEARS INQUIRE ABOUT TRANSPORTATION!
