SACRED HEART OF BAYSIDE PITCHER SHUTS DOWN OPPOSITION SCORES GAME’S ONLY RUN TO WIN TITLE By ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@qns.com/@A_GiudiceReport The Sacred Heart of Bayside Cardinals are the 2016 CYO Diocesan Champions thanks to an impressive overall performance by Nick Pérez, who tossed a 6-1/2 inning no-hit shutout and scored the game’s only run, as the Cardinals defeated St. Joe’s 1-0. With a regular season record of 11-2, Sacred Heart was the home team in the championship game, and Pérez went right to work, as he managed to strike out 20 of the 24 batters he faced in the game. St. Joe’s pitcher followed suit and struck out 10 of the 22 Cardinals that he faced. The heated pitchers’ duel continued until the fourth inning when Pérez — who went three-for-three at the plate with a double, two singles and five stolen bases — scored on a throwing error as he was stealing third base. This is familiar territory for the Sacred Heart of Bayside Cardinals as they have won the CYO Diocesan Championship four out of the five years that they were eligible, winning in 2012, 2014, 2015 and now 2016.
