Located just off the Montrose Avenue L train station, Dun-Well Doughnuts was established back in 2011 as New York City’s first allvegan doughnut shop. The confectionery is collaboration between college friends Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar. The duo met while attending college in Ithaca and quickly discovered their shared passion for vegan cuisine. For Dunbar (the “Dun” in Dun- Well) and Hollowell (the “Well” in Dun-Well), inspiration came in the form of a late-night fried dough craving following a Simpsons episode. “I was craving a doughnut and couldn’t find a good one in NYC, so I called up my buddy Dan and we decided to try to make one,” Hollowell explained. “We realized we had a product that was far better than any other and we really wanted to share it with as many people as we could.” Upon realizing that they had something truly unique to add to the growing local food scene, Dunbar and Hollowell decided to take the risk and open their storefront doughnut shop. “It was truly just taking the leap,” Hollowell added. “It was a really hard decision. Dan and I both, like many people, had tons of ideas, but it wasn’t until we decided to go for it and be all in that Dun-Well could become a reality.” The shop began by offering familiar favorites, such as glazed, chocolate and jelly-filled doughnuts, and went on to feature an impressive rotating roster of over 500 different doughnut flavors and varieties in a four-year span. “Our doughnuts change daily. We make new flavors every day,” Hollowell said. “We love to play in the kitchen and we love to find new flavors.” In addition to traditional doughnut shop staples like glazed and jelly, Dun-Well’s current repertoire includes over 200 flavors, with only select flavors available in the shop each day. Their rotating menu of exotic and unique offerings have included flavors such as raspberry rose, lychee, Earl Grey tea, blue rose, sweet potato pie, root beer, maple blueberry, caramel popcorn, Mexican chocolate and a peanut butter-infused creation called The Elvis. “We use local and organic ingredients whenever possible,” Hollowell added. While the doughnuts are certainly the star attraction at Dun-Well, the shop also offers ice cream, coffee, Brooklyn egg creams and Italian soda. Individual doughnuts vary in cost between $1.50 and $2.75. For those who can’t decide on just one flavor, Dun-Well offers a mixed dozen for $25 per box. They also have an option for special orders and event catering. Dun-Well Doughnuts, located at 222 Montrose Ave., is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.dunwelldoughnuts.com.
