Students in the MSW program are trained in the skills necessary to work with the diverse populations throughout New York City’s metropolitan area, including veterans, the elderly, and those with special needs. The faculty and staff at Touro hope that each graduate develops a lifelong commitment to professional development, promoting cultural diversity and advocating for services for the underserved in our society. Just like the general mission of Touro College, the BUSINESS in the NEWS Graduate School of Social Work aims to provide an education that benefits not only the individual, but also the society in which he or she lives. “We recently went around the room during orientation and asked the students to tell us a little bit about themselves, and I was overwhelmed by how many of them were from Queens,” said Dr. Bradley Karasik, Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Enrollment Management. “We have approximately 15 sites for field internships in Queens, so the goal is for students to be able to serve in the communities where they’re from.” The Master of Social Work degree at Touro is a two-year, 65-credit program, which offers several paths for obtaining the degrees. Students can choose to enroll full-time or part-time at either the Manhattan or Brooklyn learning sites. After completing basic courses that provide a foundation for the field, students continue an advanced clinical concentration in work with individuals, families and groups. In addition to their coursework, students complete 600 hours of field education in a social work agency. This helps to put what has been learned in the classroom to practice in realworld scenarios. Students in the Howard Beach school’s idea club were tasked with the question, “How can we improve our school?” After receiving a plethora of suggestions, the club made its decision and chose an “around the states” theme for school spirit week. Each class was assigned a state and spent time researching everything from the song to the state bird. Students decorated every classroom door with themes from the states as part of a competition. “The parents really liked the idea that we celebrated U.S. culture,” said Nina DeBlasio, the school’s parent coordinator. They “loved how excited their children are to come to school.” “It really brought the whole school — students, faculty, and staff — THE COURIER/Photo by Logan Miller Mrs. O’Brien and Ms. McNamee with students from class K-01. together in unity,” said Barbara King, technology teacher and moderator of the idea club. “We were out of the building for two months and so many gave to us that we wanted to give back,” said Principal Linda Spadaro. “The students are writing thank you cards to those who helped us ... this brought the whole school together and gave us a great sense of our school, community and country spirit.” TOURO COLLEGE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK MAKE A DIFFERENCE EVERY DAY BECOME A SOCIAL WORKER INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR FALL 2013 CLASSES Monday, June 3 | Monday, June 17 Sessions will take place at 6pm 43 W. 23rd Street, 8th Floor New York, NY 10010 “According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, job prospects for social workers are growing better than other occupations through 2018.
