Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, Ph.D., President of Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion (HUCJIR), will award Josée Wolff with the Doctor of Sacred Music at Graduation Ceremonies in New York on May 4, 2016 at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. Cantor Josée Wolff, Spiritual Leader of Temple Sholom in Floral Park, will be honored for 25 years of distinguished professional service as an alumnus of HUC-JIR. President Panken stated, “We honor Cantor Wolff for her dedicated service to the Jewish People and the larger world by fostering learning, community, social justice, and continuity of our heritage.” In addition to her work at Temple Sholom, Cantor Wolff is an adjunct faculty member at the Cantorial Program of Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. She also serves on the faculty of the Abraham Geiger Cantorial Program in Berlin, Germany, where she teaches weekly classes with the help of the internet. Cantor Wolff was Director of the Department of Synagogue Music of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and has served Reform congregations in the US and Europe for the past 25 years. A native of The Netherlands, Cantor Wolff holds a degree in flute from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1991 she received her M a s t e r ’s degree in S a c r e d Music from H e b r e w U n i o n C o l l e g e - J e w i s h Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music as the first woman from the European continent to be invested as a cantor. In 2010 she received her Doctor of Ministry Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Hebrew Union College.
