The Concert has become the communities recognition of Spring with an Open Air Concert and free BBQ. Joplin was buried at St. Michael’s in 1917. Evidence indicates he was a congregant of St. Michael’s Church located then and now in Manhattan. Joplin became famous for advancing Rag as a musical genre that took the hearts and minds of Americans during the early 20th Century. Maple Leaf Rag was his signature creation that he had hoped would be played when he was interred at St. Michael’s. For whatever reason which no one seems to know, Joplin’s wife refused to have her husband’s wishes honored. Hearing of this years afterwards a Brooklyn group of musicians determined to honor the last request of Joplin and did play Maple Leaf Rag at his gravesite. They also dedicated a plaque to the renowned artist that remains to mark the location of Scott Joplin. The movie “The Sting” renewed interest in the author of the Oscar winning music “The Entertainer” written by Scott Joplin. Yearly hundreds of visitors come to St. Michael’s seeking to stand next to the burial site of Joplin in homage to a great American Artist. St. Michael’s continues its tradition of being part of the community by hosting the yearly Concert and BBQ. Ed Berlin, a Joplin scholar will once again be in attendance speaking of the era of Joplin and his impact on the American music sense. Dan Levinson and his Canary Cottage Dance Orchestra will happily return to St. Michael’s to lead the musical celebration. The Concert is open to all. Join with the community in a day of music, fun and BBQ. St. Michael’s is proud to once again support Councilman Costa Constantindes in collecting Back-to-School supplies for the needs of our children. St. Michael’s requests all those who attend also support the Councilman by denotating supplies for the needs of children.
