FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com APRIL 16, 2015 • The Queens Courier 39 ▶business A Bayside pet boutique is a breath of fresh air in the community Modern Pet, a Bayside pet boutique owned by Sean Jordan and Sophia Diakakis, opened in December 2014 and offers pets and their owners a large selection of top-quality products. “Modern Pet is a professionally designed retail pet boutique that provides its customers with a unique shopping experience,” Jordan said. “From its quality product lines to its modern lifestyle design, Modern Pet’s customers will instantly realize they’re not in yesterday’s pet supply store.” The shop, located at 212-77 26th Ave., is an open and friendly environment where pet owners can bring their furry friends right into the store. Jordan and Diakakis know not only the customers’ names, but their customers’ pets’ names as well. “We found it difficult to find conveniently located shops that carried the types and quality of products we desired,” Jordan said. So Jordan and Diakakis decided to take matters into their own hands and get into the pet shop business. “As pet parents ourselves, we didn’t set out to enter the pet supply industry, we just wanted what was best for our girl Molly, an 85-pound, two-year-old Golden doodle,” Jordan said. “We, like the majority of pet parents, consider Molly a member of our family and as such, became interested and concerned with her long term health and quality of life.” Their pet store offers customers standard pet supplies, such as collars, leashes, toys, food and apparel, but they also offer unique items as well. Pet owners can purchase handmade leather collars and harnesses, designer leashes, first aid kits, life preserver vests F R E E E L E C T RO N I C S R E C Y L I N G EVENTS A R E COMING TO QUEENS T H I S S P R I NG Avoid a fine: it’s now illegal to discard electronics in the regular trash! Their food selection consists of a variety of types of pet foods, from standard foods, to gluten-free pet food, grain-free and raw food. When the store opened at the end of last year, the community was very receptive. “We were met with enthusiastic community interest and support,” Jordan said. “It was a relief to see that here in our community pet parents are very much aware of not only pet nutrition, but the products that support healthy pets.” Both Jordan and Diakakis are longtime residents of the area and feel a strong connection to the neighborhood. “I am proud to be a son of this area and to be able to provide a quality service to my neighbors,” Jordan said. “We believe our pets perform an invaluable form of companionship and deserve appropriate consideration.” Their sense of community runs deeper than just Bayside. Both Jordan and Diakakis believe in promoting local shops and buying from New York-based companies. “We make all efforts to source our products from the USA and when possible from New York,” Jordan added. “Examples of such would be apparel from, Found My Animal, a Brooklyn based, female-owned startup company. They employ local folks to design and handcraft their wares. Health Extensions, a holistic and natural food company is based in Long Island and their factory is located in upstate, NY.” Later this year, Modern Pet plans on hosting pet rescue events in their shop by teaming up with local rescue organizations.
