Heather Page, an assistant principal at the High School of Economics and Finance in Manhattan, has been named a 2016 Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. She is one of only 35 educators from the U.S. and Canada to receive the annual honor. Page will join the Linblad-National Geographic expedition experts later this year on an eleven-day voyage to Iceland for a singular field experience. She will start her journey in Washington, D.C. at the National Geographic headquarters where she will participate in hands-on photography and global outreach workshops, meet Lindblad Expeditions’ naturalists, and network with program volunteers. Page has volunteered her time and traveled extensively over the last ten years, chaperoning students on trips to Europe, Central and South America, and the South Pacific. In addition to her role as Assistant Principal, Page also teaches environmental science. “I try to teach students about the world around them, helping them acquire tools necessary to explore on their own and make a difference,” she said. “I hope my adventures in Iceland this summer will inspire my students to become global citizens and environmental stewards who will eventually embark on their own journeys.” One thing’s for sure, Page stands as a shining example of a world explorer and scholar. > Absolutely Free Student Checking •No minimum balance •No per check fee •No monthly maintenance fee > Free unlimited ATM transactions at NYCB locations > Free VISA®CheckCard > Free Direct Deposit > Free On-line Banking with Free Bill Pay† > 24 Hour Bank by Phone > Convenience •Over 140 locations in NY and NJ •Extended branch banking hours •Supermarket banking •7 day-a-week banking at many locations > Pre-Paid Solutions •VISA® Gift Card •Pre-Paid Long Distance •Pre-Paid MasterCardTM •Pre-Paid Wireless Service •MetroCards Smart Student BANKING1 Open your Student Checking2 Account and/or Savings Account and enjoy: ▪ No Minimum Balance Fee ▪ No Per-Check Fee ▪ No Monthly Service Fee ▪ Unlimited Transactions at NYCB ATMs ▪ Free Visa® debit card ▪ Free Direct Deposit ▪ Free e-Statements ▪ Free NYCB Online Banking with Bill Pay3 For more information call 718-448-7272 or visit www.myNYCB.com †For your online security, information will be verified by the Bank. Senior Maggie Capozzoli-Cavota had the opportunity to compete at Poetry Out Loud, the national poetry recitation competition for high school students, winning second place, $200 cash to purchase poetry texts at her school, and a personal $100 cash prize. Maggie recited three poems at the Syracuse competition: “Personal” by Tony Hoagland, “Dirge Without Music” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and “I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died” by Emily Dickinson. Started in 2006, the competition has motivated millions of high school students to memorize and recite some of the world’s greatest poetry. This year’s competition was held at the Hosmer Auditorium in the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. Not only is St. Francis Prep the only New York Catholic high school that made it to the State Final this year, but it is their third showing there in just eight years. Maggie is a long-time veteran of the art of poetry recitation. She has been competing at the school level since she was a freshman, was a runner-up in last year’s New York City Regional Competition, and last month represented New York City again at the State Finals, where she won first place. She is a literary powerhouse at her school and in her community. She was named the 2015 Queens Teen Poet Laureate, became Editorin Chief of Prep’s literary arts journal The Little Portion, and won the 2015 Canticle of the Sun Literary Prize. Maggie plans to become a novelist, poet, and lyricist. She wants to double major in English and Music with a future career as a writer and composer. She praised the student support system at St. Francis Prep for helping her follow her passion. “My colleagues and I say that Maggie has ‘the gift’– that rare combination of pure talent, vision, and wisdom,” said Eric Hafker, English teacher and Poetry Out Loud Coordinator at Prep. “Poetry is one of the most beautiful components of writing and an integral pillar in society’s foundation of cultural knowledge,” Maggie said. “To be able to represent my school, as well as so many people who have a deep love for an understanding of poetry, is a great honor.”
