30 THE QUEENS COURIER • MARCH 31, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com RETRACTABLE ROOF NEAR COMPLETION AT ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM BY RAISA CAMARGO rcamargo@qns.com/@Raisa4242 Renovations to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park will surely give fans the advantage beginning with this year’s U.S. Open. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is serving up a fi ve-year, $600 million construction plan for the tennis complex, including a retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium and a new 6,000-seat Grandstand Stadium. Chief Operating Offi cer Daniel Zausner told reporters during a tour on the U.S. Open construction projects Wednesday that the new Grandstand Stadium and Arthur Ashe Stadium roof will be ready just in time for the matches this year. The Grandstand Stadium will also have more capacity for guests. “We are in a very enviable position of being sold out for the majority of our matches, so any opportunity we have to create more space is tremendous for us – to possibly introduce more fans to the game,” he said. Zausner believes that they will easily sell up to 6,000 seats after the construction of the Grandstand and renovations to Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong stadiums are complete. The renovations at Louis Armstrong Stadium also include a retractable roof and more seating capacity. “Our fans are looking for shade. They’re looking for more open space and we’ve achieved both of those with that,” Zausner said. “It will still feel like playing in an outdoor stadium.” The new Grandstand Stadium will be complete for the 2016 U.S. Open matches along with the debut of the Arthur Ashe Stadium’s retractable roof. The Louis Armstrong Stadium will be complete for 2018. Other upgraded amenities includes an expansion of courts, more concession stands, retail stores, and elevated platforms. Demolition of the old Grandstand and Louis Armstrong stadiums will take place in the fall. Construction on the new Louis Armstrong will begin at the same time. The new Arthur Ashe stadium will include a 250ft by 250ft retractable roof, which is expected to be lighter than other roofs made of metal panels. It will take approximately seven to 10 minutes to open and close. A stadium climate control system will also be installed. The stadium’s capacity will remain the same since 2015 with an estimated 23,771 available seats. The Grandstand Stadium is expected to be complete for the 2016 US Open along with a revamped Southern Campus. The stadium will also include a rectractable roof. The capacity for the Grandstand Stadium will increase from 6,106 in 2015 to 8,000 in 2017. The Southern Campus near the Grandstand Stadium will be extended and replaced with 10 courts. The border of the courts was moved 30 feet for the extension.
