APPOINTMENTS Atiya Butler Cleon D. Edwards Congratulations are in order for Atiya Butler, director of external affairs and marketing for Elmhurst Hospital Center, and Cleon D. Edwards, associate executive director of external affairs for Queens Hospital Center, both recently appointed. HONORS AND AWARDS A Little Neck music professor has been given the 2013 Curt Sachs Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the American Musical Instrument Society (AMIS).  Dr. William Hettrick, who teaches at Hofstra University, will be recognized at the AMIS’s annual meeting this spring in Virginia. The award recognizes lifetime scholarly achievement and service to AMIS. Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Congressmember Carolyn Maloney hosted “Celebrating the Women of Northwestern Queens,” to commemorate Women’s History Month at The Astor Room in Astoria. The legislators honored the accomplishments of three members of the community. City Councilmember Julissa Ferreras was presented with the Gloria D’Amico Award for Leadership in Politics, named after the late Queens County Clerk who was a force in Queens politics for decades. Civic leader Evie Hantzopoulos received the Community Service Award, and Long Island City chef and entrepreneur Gianna Cerbone was honored with the “Excellence in Small Business Award.” Ferreras, who represents areas of Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, is the first Hispanic woman to hold a Queens seat on the City Council. She is chair of the Women’s Issues Committee and is a member HONORS AND AWARDS of the Committee on Civil Rights, Consumer Affairs, Economic Development, Finance Health and Parks and Recreation. Hantzopoulos is executive director of Global Kids, Inc., a non-profit educational organization that promotes global citizenship, leadership development, and social action with New York City and Washington D.C. youth who live in underserved communities. Cerbone is the proprietor of Manducatis Rustica restaurant in Long Island City. She opened the restaurant in 2008 and since then it has expanded to include cooking classes, private party venues, and film shoot locales. In 2010 she co-founded LIC Business Women, an organization dedicated specifically to support the growth of women-owned businesses in Long Island City. She is a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program and sits on the board for the LIC YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HISTORY The St. Francis Prep girls’ volleyball team was honored by the City Council on March 27 for winning its sixth Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship title and placing third in the state. The “Lady Terriers” also have a total academic average of 94.7 percent.
