Kids learn how to go green, save money BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO aaltamirano@queenscourier.com A mobile EcoHouse rolled into a Long Island City park to teach young people how to save energy, especially in their homes or apartments. Co-hosted by I.S. 204, this 21st century classroom was unveiled on Thursday, March 7 at the Dutch Kills Playground by Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer, alongside Richard Cherry, president of the Community Environmental Center, Yvonne Leimsider, principal of I.S. 204 and parents and students of the school. “It is incredibly important to instill in our youth an appreciation for how their actions can lead to a more sustainable future for the city and world,” said Van Bramer. Although the mobile environmental center was unveiled last week, it migrated to the playground on February 20 and welcomed students from I.S. 204 and other local schools until it departed on Tuesday, March 12. The EcoHouse resembled a house on wheels with an environmental classroom inside where the young people got hands-on experience with different methods to conserve energy. The exhibits included demonstrations of a lo-flow shower head to save water, proper insulation instruction, a light bulb buying guide and many other environmental-friendly displays to help “understand how to save energy, save money and protect the natural world around you.” “We’re really of the belief that it’s very important for young people to learn about protecting the environment,” said Alexis Greene, public relations director for Community Environmental Center. “This is a generation that when it grows up will have to deal with climate change head on.” The mobile EcoHouse plans on coming back this fall and finding a home at the New York Hall of Science at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
