BY MELISA CHAN [email protected] @MelissaCourier An Elmhurst scholar is one step closer to fulfilling his dream of being a marine engineer. Orian del Fierro, 18, has been nominated by State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky for a full, four-year scholarship at SUNY Maritime College, in the school’s prestigious Cadet Appointment Program (CAP). “I was very, very honored to be nominated,” the Cathedral Preparatory Seminary senior said. “I was really excited she picked me.” State lawmakers can nominate up to two students for the program every four years. Del Fierro, who has not yet been accepted to the school, said the scholarship could save him nearly $80,000 upon graduation, with no requirement to join the military afterward. “Right now, I’m on a scholarship for high school. If I didn’t have it, I’m not sure I’d be able to get the education I got,” he said. “Now, going into college, it’s the same thing.
