In a unanimous decision, the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York (CUNY) has appointed James B. Milliken, president of the University of Nebraska system since 2004, as its new chancellor. “President Milliken is a highly regarded national leader in higher education. He brings to CUNY an impressive record of extensive academic and administrative experience and a demonstrated record of success in working with students, faculty, alumni and community leaders to offer quality, affordable higher education,” Board Chairperson Photo courtesy of CUNY Benno Schmidt said in a statement from CUNY on Wednesday, January 15. CUNY touted several achievements under Milliken’s tenure at the University of Nebraska, as examples of his record. During his tenure, according to CUNY, enrollment at the University of Nebraska in 2013 reached a 20-year high, there have been record investments in financial aid, Milliken has helped lead initiatives to develop new public/private campuses, and he has been a strong advocate of distance education, through innovative online courses and programs to connect faculty and students across the state and around the world. Milliken replaces Matthew Goldstein, who retired this summer, and held the chancellor position for 14 years. “I am honored and excited by this appointment to lead America’s premier urban public university,” Milliken said. “CUNY today has a world class faculty, talented students, an outstanding reputation, rising enrollments, increased academic standards and the most diverse student body in the nation. It enjoys significant momentum and unlimited potential,” he added. In addition to heading up the University of Nebraska, Milliken also graduated from the school. But he also has a strong connection to New York City. Milliken earned his law degree in 1983 from New York University, according to CUNY. He also served with the Legal Aid Society’s Civil Division, Chelsea Neighborhood Branch and was an attorney with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft from 1983 to 1988. APPOINTMENTS Mount Sinai Queens has a new face on its staff. Dr. Brian Radbill, chief medical officer and vice-president of medical affairs at Mount Sinai Queens, announced the appointment of Dr. Edward C. Yang as the new Orthopaedics Department Chief. “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Yan to our staff at Mount Sinai Queens,” said Caryn A. Schwab, executive director at Mount Sinai Queens. “He joins a strong team and will expand the capabilities we already have in this critically important surgical area.” Yang, board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, had previously served as Regional Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at Elmhurst Hospital Center. Yang is also a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “I am especially excited to be part of the community that is Mount Sinai Queens,” said Yang. “There is a sense of family and that extra measure of caring one experiences in the community hospital that is so appealing to me, and that you don’t find in the larger hospital settings.” Yang earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at NYU’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, Orthopaedic Institute. INSTALLATION Councilmember Eric Ulrich, former Congressmember Bob Turner and 2014 Congressional candidate Stephen Labate participated in the Northeast Queens Republican Club’s installation of 2014 officers and Board of Governors recently at the Clearview Golf Course. The plaque, which is shaped like a flame, contains Watch’s favorite quote from St. Ignatius of Loyola: “Go forth and set the world on fire.” “That’s what we have to do to rebuild the party this year,” said Ryan. “We will reach out to our community and remind people what all of us here today already know: that the core principles of the Republican Party are the most inclusive, compassionate and effective way forward and upward for all New Yorkers.” Republican State Committee Member (40th AD) and NEQRC Board Member Oliver Tan, State Committee Member (27th AD) and NEQRC Board Member Joan Vogt, NEQRC President Kevin Ryan, State Committee Member (26th AD) and NEQRC Board Member Anne Marie Devlin, former Congressmember Bob Turner and Councilmember Eric Ulrich
