OFF CHRISTINE HAIDER CHAIRPERSON COMMUNITY BOARD 11 P ersonal Background: Christine Haider currently holds an active role in wide range organizations that serve the community. She is currently the chair of Community Board 11; finance chair and treasurer of Queens Hospital Center; president of Harding Heights Civic Association; and a member of the Notary Public, National Notary Association, International Association of Administrative Professionals in Queens County, 111th Precinct Community Council and Saul Weprin Democratic Club. Haider has been calling Flushing home since 1950. She attended St. Kevin’s Elementary School in Flushing, the Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica and Claremont Secretarial School in the Chrysler Building in NYC. Profesional Background: In 1965, Haider became the executive secretary at the National Industrial Conference Board in NYC. She then began work in 1978 as an administrator for the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University. She worked as a human resources specialist in the NY Army National Guard from 2005 to 2007. She is presently married to Howard C. Haider with a son who is a Fordham College graduate and small business owner. Her contributions to her community have not gone unnoticed. She received the Women’s History Month Award, the Community Board Service Award, Marjorie Matthews Advocacy Award, 2004 Administrative Professional of the Year, The Karen Cooper Award “Wind Beneath My Wings” for outstanding support of New York Military Forces, Outstanding Citizen Award and the Rosemary Gunney Award. Greatest Achievement: In addition to her marriage of 48 years and her son Howard Jr., Haider’s greatest achievement is being elected as the chair of Community Board 11. She has been able to work very closely with the district manager and her executive board for the betterment of the community. Motivation to Contribute to Society: “I believe very strongly in preserving the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” she said. She has been able to take an active role in doing so as chair of Community Board 11, tackling problems like neighborhood zoning. As co-chair of the North Flushing/ East Bayside Zoning Committee, she helps conduct site inspections to create an evaluation of recommendations to submit to the full board. Biggest Challenge: Haider and the community board act as an advisory body, but ultimately final decisions about the community are made by other agencies. “In trying to maintain the quality of life in our neighborhoods, I find it very challenging to convince the decision-making entities of our board’s recommendation about renewing a variance, or inappropriateness of McMansions being built, or a school inappropriate for a site.” Haider and the board strive to represent what’s best for the community.
