Brown. Angel Zabala of Astoria Boulevard told prosecutors that he was trying to kill the two strangers when he fired shots at them at the intersection of Main Avenue and Welling Court. Between 12:40 a.m. and 3:35 a.m. on July 11, authorities said, Zabala and another man walked up to Jovany Heredia, 22, and Edwin Cruz, 21, and said, “What’s crackin’? It’s always crackin’ here. Who you reppin’?” the criminal complaint said. According to the criminal complaint, Zabala and his accomplice started beating the two victims when Zabala pulled out a 9 mm gun. He shot Heredia three times and Cruz once. Both men were treated at local hospitals and recovered from the gunshots. “The defendant admitted to approaching two men, arguing and shooting them. Both victims were injured, but fortunately survive,” Brown said. “This kind of random, senseless violence has no place in a civilized society. The defendant will be sentenced next month to a lengthy term in prison.” Zabala pleaded guilty to two counts of seconddegree attempted murder and is expected to be sentenced to serve 20 years in prison on Feb. 24. 115th Precinct Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights Three sought in slashing near Jackson Heights bar Police released on Jan. 12 images of three individuals wanted in connection with a recent knife attack in front of a nightclub in Jackson Heights. Jackson Heights man killed girlfriend’s dog in dispute: DA A Jackson Heights man is facing charges of aggravated animal cruelty after allegedly throwing his girlfriend’s Chihuahua to the floor during a verbal dispute in front of the woman’s daughter. Prosecutors said Carlos Hernandez, 32, of 73rd Street in Jackson Heights got into an argument with his girlfriend at her home in Forest Hills on Jan. 10 at around 4:15 p.m. During the dispute, Hernandez allegedly grabbed the Chihuahua out of her hands and slammed it to the floor, causing it to bleed from its ears, collapse on the floor, and die minutes later. His girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter, who was the dog’s caregiver, witnessed the incident. Hernandez was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, fourth-degree criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison. The arrest was announced Monday as Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced the creation of a special unit in his office dedicated to prosecuting animal cruelty cases. “Such acts of aggression toward animals cannot — and will not — be tolerated,” Brown said.
