UPGRADES ON THE WAY FOR TOWERS HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING AND CHANUKAH! Bob Ricken Glen Kotowski’s letter about the upcoming generator installation project was both timely and informative. This is a massive undertaking which involves the following: We have to remove three old generators, Store them at a facility so we can still utilize their old parts that are no longer being manufactured. We have to rewire the entire generator room since the old wiring is about 40 years old. Remove part of the roof of the generator room in order to take out the 3 old generators and install the three new ones. Since we will have to turn on and turn off electricity, we have rented several electric generators to assist in minimizing a loss of electricity to the building and residents’ apartments. Our staff will be on duty throughout the day and night in order to assist and supervise the entire project. This was an enormous job in researching the best new generators and negotiating the best financial deal possible. from the towers A Message from the President: Herb Cooper and his committee deserve our thanks for a job exceedingly well done. This was almost a year’s work and the next five months will hopefully complete the most difficult and complex project in the history of North Shore Towers. Obviously our General Manager, Glen Kotowski, said in his letter to the community, “Once the project is completed, the modernized equipment will provide improved energy efficiency, cost effectiveness and a reliable, more environmentally friendly source of power well into the future”. One mission of your Board of Directors and Management team is to continually maintain and update our facility and grounds, in order to make sure we will remain the premier cooperative in New York City. After Sandy struck we were able to: Replace the entire garden area adjacent to the parking lot. Improve the plantings around the buildings and the entire property. Rebuild the playground and add a new seating area in the garden. Remove all damaged trees from the golf course. Purchase a new barbecue in the garden area. Repair the roof of the indoor pool and restore the fencing around the entire property. Construct a small building as a security check point by the truck entrance to the underground garage. NONE OF THIS WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT GLEN KOTOWSKI AND HIS OUTSTANDING STAFF! In addition, as most of us can observe, the entire gym area is being repainted, redecorated and carpeted. Also the old couch in the room near the women’s entrance to the pool is being replaced and the entire indoor pool will be redecorated as well. We thank you all for understanding that at times an area will be closed since we are working to improve the facility and to maintain our beautiful facilities. LIC Flea & Food Indoor Holiday Market: FESTIVE FUN AND UNIQUE SHOPPING BY MAGGIE HAYES Calling all holiday shoppers — the LIC Flea & Food Market is on its way for another fun-filled season for families. The newly-launched Long Island City market is opening indoors this December. Before opening day on December 7, the Flea will be hosting a holiday party on December 5 to give everyone a sneak peek of the new holiday site. The celebration, organized with the LIC Partnership and sponsored by Modern Spaces, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Aside from the countless vendors, LIC Flea will host live holiday music, including the Danny Wellington Band, free pictures with Santa and activities from ping-pong to soccer with the New York Cosmos soccer club, the new NASL Soccer Bowl Champions. Shoppers can also buy fresh Christmas trees and wreaths. Flea favorites will also be making a holiday comeback with new vendors catering to the seasonal spirit. Food, jewelry, fashion, furniture, arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles and more will be available. The Flea will run Saturdays and Sundays, starting December 7, in the warehouse connected to the original outdoor lot at the corner of 5th Street and 46th Avenue, near the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign. The site is within walking distance of the No. 7, E and G trains, and the LIC East River Ferry stop. It can also be accessed directly from Gantry Park’s walkway along Anable Basin. A parking garage is available on 5th Street. LIC Flea has partnered with the East River Ferry, Queens Economic Development Corporation, TF Cornerstone, the champion New York Cosmos and LIC Partnership. “Beautiful apartments and local amenities make Long Island City a great neighborhood, but it’s the area’s organizations and activities, like LIC Flea & Food, that bring residents together and make Long Island City a great community,” said Sofia Estevez, executive vice president of TF Cornerstone.
