Here’s to you, Mr. Robinson

As if the November 13 edition
of the popular monthly 92
ST Y presentation wasn’t
already special enough with its
spotlight on legendary lyricist Hal
David, featuring frequent performer
of his tunes, iconic chanteuse
Dionne Warwick. NST resident
and career music professional,
Irwin Robinson, will join host
Fred Chernow, to answer audience
questions and share anecdotes from
his years in the industry, including
his time working with the great
songwriter who died in 2012.
Forming half of what was
arguably as famous a songwriting
duo as The Beatles’s Lennon and
McCartney, David and composer
Burt Bacharach created a smooth
R&B sound indelibly linked to the
‘60’s and ‘70’s. Their hits included
“What the World Needs Now Is
Love,” “This Guy’s in Love with
You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love
Again,” “Do You Know the Way
to San Jose,” “Walk on By” and “I
Say a Little Prayer,” the latter three
with Warwick. They also created
the Oscar-nominated title songs
for “What’s New Pussycat?” and
“Alfie,” as well as “The Look of
Love” from Casino Royale and
“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My
Head” from Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, which won the 1969
Academy Award for Best Song.
In 1963, after six years at a small
music firm, special guest Robinson
was hired as general counsel of
the music division of Columbia
Pictures. In 1976, he was asked
to join the Chappell/Intersong
Music group as its President and
CEO, and for the last 40 years, has
served on the Boards of Directors
of ASCAP, the National Music
Publishers Association and the
Songwriters Hall of Fame, among
other musical achievements. No
surprise, Robinson worked with
many industry legends in addition
to Hal David, including Marvin
Hamlisch, Neil Diamond, Rod
Stewart and Carole King.
