40 North Shore Towers Courier n November 2014 Short Film Festival at North Shore Towers: the sequel Part 2 of this year’s Short Film Festival @ NST included Jeff Sousas’ “Hirosaki Players” and “Saab Story” by Max Joseph, about the comic Billy Braver. By Marilyn Chris The second part of the second Annual Short Film Festival at North Shore Towers (SFF@NST) was a huge success. Over 600 people participated in both venues, the Towers Cinema and the Towers on the Green. It was an awesome evening and all the comments are so very positive and encouraging. The evening started with an exciting two-minute silent short film, “The History of the World.” It was followed by Jeff Sousas’ “Hirosaki Players”. Then came “Three Light Bulbs” by Min Ding and “Recorder Exam” by Bora Kim. “Saab Story” by Max Joseph (about the comic Billy Braver) rounded out the evening. “I’ve had the chance to show The Hirosaki Players at festivals in New York City, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, but I’ve never experienced it with as large an audience as I did at North Shore Towers,” Sousas said. “For an indie filmmaker like myself, it was a rare, awesome experience. But it wasn’t just the size of the audience that left an impression on me; it was the warm and engaging dialogue we all shared after the show. I wish I could have stayed longer to chat not only about The Hirosaki Players, but all the films in the festival, present and future. I’m extremely grateful and honored to have received the audience award, and I hope to be back at North Shore Towers with another film in the very near future.” A guest of one of the filmmakers, Marlene Perlstein, said: “I’m most impressed with the professionalism and quality of the films shown at North Shore Towers. The first three had similar themes: very interesting and complex relationships between parents and children. May this Festival be an inspiration for other Short Film Festivals to be developed so that filmmakers have an opportunity to show their work to such a varied and discriminating audience. Thank you for this experience.” Bruce Savid, a member of the Board of Directors said: “The Short Film Festival is another example of the cultural enrichment taking place at NST.” Linda Savid was kind enough to say “Kudos! For the second Annual Short Film Festival. Looking forward to the third.” Florine Lipsay had this to say: ‘How creative these filmmakers are! The films were emotionally charged, thought provoking and most enjoyable. I look forward to the 3rd Annual Short Film Festival here at North Shore Towers. Mr. Sousa joined us for a lively and appreciative Q & A session. Many interesting questions were raised and much positive comment was made about his fascinating film and the evening in general. The committee tallied the votes and were so pleased by how many people had participated. The recipient of the Audience Appreciation Award went to Jeff Sousa for “Hirosake Players”, a wonderful, very complicated tory of a father – son relationship in a Japanese theatrical family. November 10th promises to be an interesting evening. It will be a make-up session mainly for the tennis club members and any others who missed the first, September 16th showing. It is scheduled for the VIP Room and all are welcome. Keep an eye out for further details. Also, the Committee is planning to do a mini-retrospective in December or January of the first four recipients of the Audience Appreciation Award. The films are: “Achille” by Giorgia Farina, “Comfortable Distance” by James Bang , “Hirosaki Players” by Jeff Sousa and “Haber” by Daniel Ragussis You voted for them and you will have the opportunity to see them again. Date and time to be announced. Hope to see you there. We, the committee (Lee Wallace, Fred Chernow, member of the Board, and Marilyn Eagle and Dr. Robert Eagle and myself,) are looking forward to a third Annual Short Film Festival at North Shore Towers next September 29, 2015. and October 15, 2015. We eagerly solicit any “local” filmmakers that wish to submit their short films and possibly be included in next years Festival. See you at the SFF@NST.
