16 North Shore Towers Courier n November 2014 A good night’s sleep and more: Men’s Club Fred Chernow tells all on how to get some shut eye BY PAUL NETTLER At our meeting on October 15th, attended by about 70 members and guests, the Men’s Club had the pleasure of again welcoming Fred Chernow as our guest speaker. If you remember, Fred spoke to us a few months ago on the subject of memory. This time the topic was sleep and how to get a good night’s rest. In doing his research on memory, Fred realized that there is a strong relationship between having a good memory and an adequate night’s sleep. Good sleep equals good memory. While the rest of the body may be sleeping, the brain is always active. It’s busy contemplating what has happened during the day and what might be happening tomorrow, and it needs sound sleep to do the job adequately. It has been found that studying before going to bed can improve one’s memory. The expression: “I’ll sleep on it” when trying to solve a problem is more than just an expression. It’s reality. Pass that on to the grandkids when they’re preparing for the SATs. Fred gave us a few tips on how to get restful sleep: Don’t go to bed on a full or empty stomach, no nightcaps for two hours before bedtime, keep the same sleep hours even on the weekends or vacations, exercise, and try meditation. Also, try counting backwards from 100 by 7s. If it doesn’t work once, do it again. It really does work. Watch TV or read somewhere else, but not in bed. Bed should be only for sleeping. Some might take exception to that one, but that’s another story. And if you want to get more information, you’ll have to buy his book. It will be titled “Sleep Well Tonight.” So a big thank you Fred, for awakening us to the power and importance of sleep. On October 6th a group of 18 members and guests bussed into Manhattan to visit the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. For some it was a return to a bit of their family history. While waiting for our tour to start, we saw a movie in which was described (with archival footage) the ethnic evolution of that geographical area from the original Irish, escaping the potato famine, to present day Hispanics. At one time the area was considered to be the most densely populated geographical area on earth and one could believe it by seeing some of the street scene photos. Sometimes, six or eight people lived in an apartment no bigger than a second bedroom here in North Shore Towers. And the plumbing was outside! Our docent for the tour was a gentleman named Dave who was most knowledgeable about not only the Lower East Side, but also about New York City itself. We visited two apartments. One had been occupied by a typical Jewish family and one by a typical Italian family. We were given actual historical information about the families that lived in these apartments. The visit evoked memories of some in the tour. One of us even recognized the linoleum on the floor. Afterward, we were rudely ripped back to the present by lunch at Katz’s deli. The fond memories of chulent gave way to the reality of overstuffed corned beef sandwiches. Many thanks to Lee Hiller for arranging a most memorable trip. Our End of Year Dinner which was held the next night at the Swan Club was an unqualified success. Approximately 80 members and guests attended. Even the weather cooperated. The hors d’oeuvres were plentiful. The conversation flowed freely, no doubt fueled by unending liquid refreshment, and we got to know each other a little bit better. The food was good and the price was right. Of course, having a DJ was a big plus. When the music began, the ladies immediately took over the dance floor to exhibit their terpsichorean skills, to be joined later by their dates when the music became more romantic. When the YMCA song was played, one might think that we were at a wedding reception. Of course, these affairs don’t happen all by themselves, so our hats off and thanks to Leo Tujak for all the effort and work he put in to give us a gala evening. And speaking of Leo, our Treasurer, he wants to remind those who have not paid their dues that they are due now. They are $60.00 and your check should be made out to North Shore Towers Men’s Club and left at either the Country Club reception desk or with the Concierge at Building 3 to the attention of Leo Tujak, Apt. 7A. Our speaker at our next meeting on Thursday November 13th at 7:30 will again be a member of our Men’s Club family: Gary Darche. Gary’s speech is titled “From Staten Island New York to Fergueson Missouri – A Taxpayer’s View. Gary will discuss the recent shootings there from the point of view of a civil lawyer. He will cover the financial implications to the taxpayers and the basic principles of common law negligence involved. The presentation will not be technical and will be for the non-lawyer. Future events include a poker tournament on November 10th, Bingo Night on November 20th and a film to be shown at our December 11th meeting. And, of course, there is our weekly Tuesday morning informal breakfasts in the VIP Room at 9:15. Events are also planned for Florida, so Snow Birds, check your emails. If you have any questions, please contact our President, Al Fuchs at 917-612- 5350 and [email protected], or our Events Committee Chairman, Arnie Rabinowitz at 718-819-8070 and [email protected]. MGA comes to NST to play One of the oldest amateur golf organizations in the U.S., the Metropolitan Golf Association, staged its women’s four-ball tournament at North Shore Towers last month – an honor for our club and a testament to the quality of the course that sits right outside our backdoor. It was an exciting contest that had to go into a sudden-death playoff to determine the winner after a neck-and-neck contest over the first 18 holes. Ultimately, the team from Glen Cove Golf Club -- Susan Canarick and Janet Mazza -- won the tournament on the first hole of the playoff over the team from Hollow Brook Golf Club in Westchester. A banquet at the Towers club followed. Brian Mahoney, managing director of rules and competitions for the MGA, at the awards luncheon.
