Babes Card Party & Afternoon Tea
A LOVELY AFTERNOON FOR A GREAT CAUSE
BY JILL DAVIS
What could be better than
a lovely afternoon of
games followed by an oh-so
proper British tea? Not much,
that’s for sure, especially when the
gathering is for a very worthy cause.
The Ladies’ Card Room was the
venue for the Babes’ Against Cancer
“Part 2” on September 20, with the
unique tea party theme in full force
(complete with hats). The reason
for the two-parter boiled down to a
matter of uncertainty this year; what
could be reasonably held when…and
where? The event is planned far in
advance, so having the card party on
a different day from the August Babes
Against Cancer event made sense.
NST board member and chair of
the event, Theresa Oropallo, said,
“I had the idea of having a com-bined
Card Party/Tea Party and
through the hard work of Mary
Anne Langone and Buffy Dimas,
that idea became a reality.”
Tables were filled with 80 attend-ees
who played mah jongg, bridge
or canasta, after which a delightful
array of sandwiches, scones and
desserts were served. In keep-ing
with the theme, crusts were
removed from the cucumber, tuna
and egg sandwiches (of course)
and were prepared by Buffy and
brought to each table on tiered
silver trays. How fancy! Your
choice of beverage was tea—no
coffee served at this English repast!
Prizes were awarded for best hats
and generous raffle prizes were
also to be had, which included
such goodies as a $200 gift card for
jewelry (yes, please), dinner at Il
Bacco, Bryant & Cooper, Stressa
and others, and baskets from NST’s
own Mr. O’s and NST Supermarket.
So far this year’s Babes events
have brought in nearly $30,000.
Terri reported, “It was a great day
and I thank all the women who sup-ported
the event. This event alone
brought in over $4,000 and we still
have two more events - Land on the
Green and the October Walk.”
So be on the lookout for
information on these upcoming
happenings.
