Tuesday, October 8th, 2013 An Interactive Evening with Author/Qi Instructor, David Knoll 8 p.m. – VIP Room Meet “Qi Improving Our Quality of Life” author, David Knoll. Through power point presentation, lecture and actual demonstration (which we hope you will all participate), David will explain the benefits of Qi. This 800-year-old technique uses meditation, breathing exercises, healing sounds, simple kung fu movements along with flowing dance moves. It’s a combination of meditation, yoga, dance and tai chi all rolled into one! Qi helps to not only strengthen our physical health, but also achieve emotional balance and decrease stress. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 Arnie Gruber Band 8 p.m. – VIP Room Arnie Gruber is a pianist, vocalist and one-time music director at the Rainbow Room. He led a 10-piece orchestra, played for Paul McCartney and did three of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s birthday parties.” Gruber’s resume includes stints at the Waldorf, the St. Regis and the Pierre. “As a pianist, he would describe himself as classically trained and jazz influenced. Thursday, October 17, 2013 92nd St. Y Program…… This month’s selection “Mark Bittman & Ruth Reichl” followed by a discussion led by Fred Chernow 7:30 p.m. – VIP Room Mark Bittman asks, “Why cook?” in his new book,”How to Cook Everything: The Basics.” Bittman addresses this question in a conversation with Ruth Reichl about how cooking shaped his own life and how just picking up a pan and starting to cook brings numerous and wonderful benefits extending well beyond the kitchen. Mark Bittman’s books include the best-selling, How to Cook Everything series and Food Matters. He was The New York Times “Minimalist” columnist for 13 years and now writes for the magazine and op-ed page. Ruth Reichl is editorial advisor to gilttaste.com and a judge on Top Chef Masters. She is the former editor in chief for Gourmet and an author of many books, most recently, “For You Mom, Finally.” Monday, October 21, 2013 Amy Winter, Director and Curator of the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College 8 p.m. – VIP Room THE GODWINTERNBACH MUSEUM and BIALA: MEMORY AND HISTORY This presentation will be a fully illustrated slide talk Godwin- Ternbach Museum Director and Curator Amy Winter will introduce the museum to the audience with a brief history of the museum’s founders (Frances Godwin and Joseph Ternbach) and a sample of artworks and artifacts in the collection. She will talk about the museum’s educational mission and give a short survey of past exhibitions. Then she will turn to the current exhibition, Biala: Vision and Memory, discussing the artist’s biography, early life in New York, move to Paris in 1930, life with the famous author and critic Ford Madox Ford, and return to New York where she became a vital member of the New York School from the 1950s to the 1990s. Throughout her long career, Biala gained critical recognition and painted exquisitely crafted canvases in a personal and intimate style that, even now, resists classification Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013 A DVD Concert…. “The Bee Gees – One Night Only” 8 p.m. – VIP Room (To capture the true flavor of the concert… the volume will be kept LOUD). One Night Only is a live album and DVD by the Bee Gees. It features the group’s concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1997 and includes many of their greatest hits. The Bee Gees performed songs from every decade from the 1960s to the ‘90s. They also sang a tribute song to their late brother Andy Gibb, and old footage of Andy is shown. Céline Dion gueststarred on the Bee Gees-penned “Immortality”. Recorded vocals by Frankie Valli are featured during “Grease”, and are also taken from the original song. Thursday, October 24, 2013 LIJ Presents…. David Marcello & Brant Macpherson 8 p.m. – VIP Room Recreational Sports Injuries & Prevention David Marcello, PT is a 1990 graduate of Diemen College in Buffalo, New York. He is currently the Director of Rehabilitation at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Brant Macpherson, PT is a 1998 graduate of Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He is currently the Manager of Rehabilitation at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. They will discuss mechanisms of injury for common recreational sports injuries. As well as treatment and preventative measure to help avoid these injuries.
