North Shore Towers Courier n September 2016 3 THANK YOU AND GOODBYE North Shore Towers Board President Mort Gitter passed away suddenly Friday evening, August 26. A resident with wife Suzanne since 1988, Gitter was a devoted husband, father of two and grandfather of four. Save for a 2-year hiatus from 2004–2006, Gitter was an active member of the North Shore Towers Board of Directors for nearly twenty uninterrupted years, serving in nearly every capacity at various times, including Treasurer, Finance Committee Chair, Chief Financial Officer and President. When he joined the Board in 1995, he cited a desire “to be active in protecting the investment he had made in the corporation,” while also having a voice in its activities. During his time on the Board, the co-op has grown tremendously, overcoming the attacks of 9-11; weathering the financial meltdown of 2008; and undergoing marked improvements, such as the installation of generators— making NST energy self-sufficient—upgrade of the lighting in the Arcade and other common areas; and renovations to the building lobbies, restaurant and cinema; making NST one of the most desirable places to live in New York City. Gitter wasn’t alone in these accomplishments, but he was certainly an important part of them. He will be missed… It is with great sadness that I have to write these words about Mort Gitter, who has recently passed away. I have known him for about 9 years when he interviewed my wife, Louise, and I when we purchased our apartment. In that time, I have known him to be truly dedicated to the betterment of the North Shore Towers as he served as President of the Board.  He will be missed by his loving family, his friends and his colleagues on the Board… but most of all, North Shore Towers has lost a great advocate and friend as well. Sincerely —Mario Carmiciano I am deeply saddened by the passing of our Board President Morton Gitter. While our professional opinions at times differed, I was always confident that the best interest of the North Shore Towers community was the first and foremost incentive that drove him. As the longest standing resident member of the Board of Directors, serving as the Chairman of every committee over the years, Mort and his family are deserving of our appreciation for the many years of hard work that he dedicated towards the betterment of the North Shore Towers community that he truly loved.  He will be greatly missed by all of us.  —Glen Kotowski, General Manager Mort Gitter was the consummate volunteer: serving as a pro bono Small Claims Judge; spending summers in Israel, where he worked in soup kitchens while his wife Sue taught children English; and for the longest time serving on the North Shore Towers Board of Directors, twice as president. He was always available, giving much of his time to the Country Club and Finance Committees when he was not in the Fitness Center or on the golf course. The shock of his sudden passing will be with us for a long time.  Our condolences to Sue and her family. Rest in Peace, Mort. —Fred Chernow The sudden passing of Board President  Mort Gitter has shocked our entire community. We will all remember his many years of service to the residents of North Shore Towers. Our sincere sympathies go out to Sue Gitter and the entire Gitter family… —Bob Ricken On Friday, August 26, 2016 Mort Gitter, President of the North Shore Towers Board of Directors died suddenly. Mort dedicated his life to serving others and making their lives better. Mort was a wellknown and respected Attorney. He found time to volunteer his services pro bono representing individuals who could not afford to pay, but he believed deserved the right to professional representation. He continued his pro bono services during his retirement years. As President of the Board of Directors of North Shore Towers, Mort worked tirelessly with the Board of Directors and Management to insure that NST Residents would continue to live in a safe and beautiful community. North Shore Towers has lost a GREAT MAN. He gave every waking moment to serving his Community. Never looking for the next vote but always doing what was fair and right! Mort was my friend and his passing leaves a void in my heart. When I was first elected to the North Shore Towers Board of Directors in 2013 Mort became my mentor. He guided and supported me through some difficult times as a Board Member. I truly loved and respected him for his fairness and unending support. Mort Gitter was a man of conviction. His life should be Celebrated as we try to adjust to his sudden passing. —Felice Hannah, Board member of North Shore Towers Community Board #13 Member North Shore Towers mourns the passing of Board President Mort Gitter By Stephen Vratos
