ON THE LOT It is perhaps the most talkedabout dilemma at the Towers — parking. Nearly everyone in North Shore Towers has a tale to tell. No place to park on a summer Sunday or Saturday afternoon. “No question, it’s a tremendous problem,” says Howard Teitelbaum, who was just elected to the NST Board last month and is the new chairman of the House and Grounds Committee, which has jurisdiction over the lots. “And no question, we will come up with an answer.” Promising a “no holds barred” study of the problem, he is putting together as committee to determine the causes and suggest solutions to the overcrowding in the outdoors lots. “We are shy somewhere between 300 and 400 spaces, I believe,” he says. “A month or two at the latest, we will have a plan for the board.” That may be a very optimistic estimate for fixing a problem that the community has been grappling with for years. But, says Teitelbaum, he’s ready to try. So what can be done about the parking problem? There are as many answers as people who complain about it. In a nutshell, the problem is this: While the Towers has a number of unused spaces below ground in the three-level garage with a capacity for 2,500 cars, finding a spot in the above-ground lots – 250 spots or so where visitors, employees and other non-residents are expected to park – is harder than keeping a diet on a Caribbean cruise. “Ten years ago, the lot always seemed to be empty,” says Mario Carmiciano, a professional engineer who is also on the Towers Board. The mystery is, what happened since then? “We are a victim of our own success,” says Glen Kotowski, general manager of NST. Since so many new activities have been opened up in recent years, “”North Shore Towers is a popular destination,” he says. “And we have to make room for more visitors.” Especially on weekends, spaces are at a premium because nonresident members of the country club – golfers and tennis players – are coming into the community. “We have free pool days for families now, people are coming to shop on the Arcade, outside tennis tournaments 12 North Shore Towers Courier n August 2014 Latest on NST’s stubborn
