MEN’S CLUB

After having her presentation
postponed twice, we finally
got to hear our speaker
this month, Terrie Rabinowitz, a
counselor and psychotherapist. It
was well worth the wait. Terrie is
a highly successful therapist and
private practitioner who deals
with individuals, couples, families
and groups involving relationship
issues. Judging by the packed house
and her reception, Terrie spoke on
a subject of great interest to many.
Her topic: “Questions and Answers
in Dealing with Emotions, Moods
and Relationship Issues”.
The thrust of Terrie’s presentation
had to do with stress and suggestions
on how one can deal with it. Stress
is part of everyone’s life regardless
of age. Although a serious subject,
Terrie sprinkled her presentation
with humor. She began by asking
what the most frequently used
word in North Shore Towers is. The
answer to that question is “What?”
Terrie’s presentation introduced
the audience to the seven C’s.
They are Communicate, Caring,
Cooperation, Clarity, Compassion,
Careful (when choosing a new relationship),
and last but not least,
Confidence, which is what one will
own when practicing the seven C’s.
The clue to reducing stress begins
with the individual. One of her “do
nots” was “do not to identify yourself
by age or career, but by who
you are,” for example, funny, smart,
sweet, kind, generous, etc.
A question and answer segment
followed her presentation, which
gave participants an opportunity
to receive professional insight. The
audience was encouraged to ask
questions, using index cards to
insure privacy. It was interesting
to note how many of us share the
same concerns and fears.
Next month, we are all in for a
real treat and a lot of laughs, as our
meeting will feature an updated version
of the long-running game show,
“The Newlywed Game,” with North
Shore Towers host, Steve Auerbach.
Husbands, wives or significant
others will take turns answering
questions while their mates are out
of hearing distance. After answering,
the spouses will return and be
asked the same question, earning
points if their answers match their
spouses. The couple that finishes
with the most points will win dinner
for two. Join us for a night of much
laughter and great fun.
Our Current Events Group, held
on June 11, was again chaired by
Gary Darche who conducted the
meeting in his usual good order.
Now that we have two meetings
a month, it was decided the leadership
of the meetings be rotated
among 3 people: Gary Darche,
Lee Hiller and Steve Auerbach.
This will give each one ample time
to keep the news current for our
agendas. This month we set an
attendance record of approximately
23 members. Fortunately, we are
now using the large cardroom in
the Coleridge Lounge.
Amongst the topics discussed
were the “Me Too” movement
where the activities of Al Franken
and Harvey Weinstein were compared.
Somehow this evolved into
a discussion about women in the
armed forces. The meeting of the
Group of Seven in Canada where
Trump wound up antagonizing
Canada, Japan and our European
Allies was also discussed. S imilarities
were observed between Kim
and Trump. Trump seems to envy
dictators. As one of our members
pointed out, they both seem to
have a haircut fetish. There was
also a brief discussion about the
predictability (or lack thereof) of
the upcoming mid-term election
and the influence first-time voters
will have. We also touched upon
the immigration situation where
there was a diversity of opinions,
i.e. the law is the law vs. how can
you separate an infant from its
mother. Members are invited to
submit topics for the agendas. To
do so, just bring a written copy to
the next meeting, which will be
held on June 25 at 10:30 a.m. in
the Coleridge Lounge.
From the sublime to the more
sublime. Future planned activities
will include a bus trip to Atlantic
City or Mohegan Sun on June 26, a
7-card poker tournament, a visit to
the Queens Museum of New York,
a visit to Belmont Park, and a movie
night for members only on July 19
in the Coleridge Lounge. The movie
is titled “The Black Book” and a
discussion afterwards will be moderated
by Ronnie Levin. Popcorn
will be available.
On July 24, we are going back
for another dinner at Mitzumi in
Little Neck. Bring your appetites.
BINGO is July 29. In keeping with
our new Current Events Group
scheduling, there will be meetings
on July 12 and July 23 at 10:30 a.m.
in the Coleridge Lounge. And don’t
forget our breakfasts at Buffy’s at
9 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday. They are always well
attended.
