BY PAUL NETTLER One could liken the operation of North Shore Towers to that of a symphony orchestra presided over by a conductor who is a master of his craft. In our case, the conductor is Glen Kotowski, our General Manager, who is responsible for bringing together disparate pieces of his orchestra to perform flawlessly. On June 11th, a record attendance of more than 140 members and guests listened attentively as Glen described how he grew up literally in the shadow of our buildings to eventually become a Deputy Inspector of New York’s Finest, As a police officer, he had to deal with difficult situations, develop organizational skills and relate to all sorts of people, a work experience that suited perfectly his position as our General Manager. As General Manager, Glen feels that his primary responsibility is to watch over our money. To this extent, the paper work can be overwhelming. He estimates that he signs more than 3000 checks a year alone. All told, he figures that he spends about two and a half days a week on paper work. He has to control a staff of about 250 people and deal with outside contractors, such as Summit Security. He negotiates the various union contracts and the commercial leases. Glen also apprised us of some interesting facts. The value of our apartments is close to $200.00 per share. There are defibrillators located at strategic spots all over our community. We average about 125 medical emergencies a month and there is a special protocol set up to handle them. So we should feel secure in that respect. Most importantly, Glen had nothing but praise for those who work for him, and in essence, for us. From the various department heads to the porters, all are dedicated to making North Shore Towers special. At our business meeting prior to Glen’s presentation, Toby Horowitz unveiled an up-to-date version of our web site: northshoretowersmensclub. org. There is a new home page, which features current monthly events and activities as well as member profiles. In addition, we encourage member participation thru testimonials and blogs. Photo by Leo Tujak The speaker at our next meeting on Thursday July 9th will be Stuart Chizzk, Director of Development for the Weizmann Institute of Science. He will speak to us about the important cutting-edge scientific research taking place at the Weizmann Institute for the benefit of all humanity. Weizmann is one of Israel’s crown jewels and its scientists are at the forefront in areas, which include cancer research, stem cells, personalized medicine & nutrition and alternative energy research. Please note that Stuart’s presentation will start at 7:00 o’clock NOT 7:30. The business meeting will take place afterward. To respond to requests for more intellectual activities, we have organized a current events group and will be organizing a book club. The current events group will meet on the first Monday of the month from 10:30 am until noon at the Coleridge Lounge. Lee Hiller is the organizer. He can be reached at 347-502-7466. Ralph Edwards will be organizing the book club and he can be reached at 347-235-0472. For July, we have scheduled a fishing trip on the 15th at $35.00 per person, to which guests are invited; Bingo on the19th; a poker tourney on the 28th and a Mets baseball game on the 30th. Another Arthur Avenue day trip is also being planned. On August 6th, we will be presenting our version of The Dating Game. We have enough gals, but we could use some more guys. So come on gentlemen. Don’t be shy. You never know. To volunteer for this delicate assignment (or is it assignation?), please call Bud Bank at 516-884-5331. Put a big circle around September 9th on your calendars. That is the date of our “End of Season” dinner dance at the Swan Club. We all had a great time there last year and this year should be no different. If you would like to find out more information about our club and/or join, you can reach our president, Al Fuchs, at afuchs98@ aol.com or at 917-612-5350. To find out more about our events, please contact our Events Chairman, Arnie Rabinowitz, at [email protected] or at 516-317-6705. 30 North Shore Towers Courier n July 2015 MEN’S CLUB WOW!
