6 North Shore Towers Courier n July 2013 MIGDAL HONORS Judy Cohen and Carolyn Dinofsky MELISSA FERRARI The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah held its annual spring luncheon on Thursday, June 20, celebrating Israel’s 65th birthday. The room was filled with Hadassah members who listened to speeches, watched honorees receive awards and enjoyed delicious food. Organizer Lilly Cohen called the luncheon, which more than 160 people attended, “an established event.” Proceeds from the luncheon will go to Youth Aliyah, a program created in the 1930s to rescue children from war-torn Eastern Europe. Today, Youth Aliyah helps relocate thousands of Israeli children living on the streets. Organizer Eanes Arkawy explained that the Youth Aliyah program is especially significant to many members of Hadassah. As Holocaust survivors, they were once children at risk themselves. Two women were recognized for their impact and dedication to Hadassah at this year’s luncheon. The first award went to Judy Cohen, who received the honor of IMA of the Year. IMA, the Hebrew word for mother, was especially fitting for Cohen. A mother of two, Cohen has been involved with Hadassah not only in the United States, but in Israel too. She has given back to Hadassah, UJA and other charities as well. Brimming with pride, Cohen’s son said his mother instilled in him and his sister the value of humility, a strong Jewish heritage and of course the value of being giving. Migdal’s “Woman of the Year” award went to Carolyn Dinofsky. This is Dinofsky’s last year with the Migdal chapter as she leaves New York to move to Illinois. Speaker Roz Chumsky said Dinofsky’s “passion for knowledge and teaching and Jewish history, combined with her fantastic sense of humor” made their choice for Woman of the Year a “nobrainer.” Dinofsky arrived at North Shore Towers 21 years ago and has been deeply involved with the Migdal chapter since.
