Katerina is a glittering newly designed space with a prestigious award-winning chef and an experienced restauranteur. Chef Alberto Argudo worked for six years at Parioli Romanissimo, perhaps the most elegant and respected fine-dining Italian Restaurant in Manhattan. Chef Argudo then ran Il Mulino’s kitchen in New York City, serving as its executive chef for seven years. During his time there, Il Mulino was voted top Italian restaurant each and every year by Zagat. Antonio Cerra, the new owner of Katerina, is proud that his restaurants have been continuously rated high by Zagat (25) and won the coveted “Choice Award” for Top 10 Seafood Restaurants NYC for eight consecutive years. “I had to make a choice, since my lease in Manhattan was over, and I decided that I can serve the people of Long Island and Queens with good Italian cuisine,” he said. I found the ambience to be warm, with red and white décor, and I was surrounded with crystal chandeliers in the bar and restaurant. As soon as I was seated, the waiter immediately placed a dish of bruschetta, olives and cheese on the table, a tasty bite to accompany my wine. The wine menu is extensive; the restaurant has 29 bottles of quality wine at only $29 a bottle. I enjoyed a California Shiraz. My appetizer choice was eggplant stuffed with ricotta cheese cooked to perfection; a lump crab cake with real crab that melted in my mouth; and a delectable Caprese salad with buffalo mozzarella, a juicy beefsteak tomato and red peppers. For an entrée, my guest and I shared Pappardelle Piemontese – homemade wild mushrooms and Piemontese truffle cheese – remarkable! The Rack of Lamb was cooked to my request and was a plentiful portion. Another favorite entrée was Frutti Di Mare overflowing with shrimp, clams, scallops, mussels and calamari. The Italian cheesecake and the crème broulée were a perfect ending to a remarkable meal. This restaurant has it all: ambiance, cordial and caring host and hostess, an attentive staff and, most importantly, excellent food!
