NORTH SHORE TOWERS SOUTH
A MESSAGE FROM OUR
PRESIDENT, BOBBY GOULD
Here we are at Morikami!
Thursday, March 4, was a
beautiful day in Florida. Twelve
women from North Shore Towers
Women’s Club gathered at the
Morikami Museum.
A wonderful guide led us
through the magnificent gardens,
explaining the history of
the Japanese settlement here and
telling us about the various types
of gardens. This was followed by a
special lunch at the outside restaurant
located next to the lake. Also
available to us was an unusual gift
shop and huge movie theater giving
us some historic background,
seasonal views, and films showing
us colorful Japanese festivals that
took place here.
All of us had been successfully
vaccinated, but Covid still played
a role in our choice. Some women
just took the tour, some just came
for the luncheon, and others participated
in everything according
to their comfort level. Everyone
greatly enjoyed being together after
so many months.
We all send out love to you and
look forward to seeing you on our
return to North Shore Towers. Stay
safe and be well. ~ Love, Bobby

The New York Times recently
published an article titled
“Voices from a Year of Loss."
They reported that one in three
Americans has lost someone to the
coronavirus. Many have
coped with sudden pain and
immeasurable sorrow. For more
than a year, the presence of death
has settled over the Unites States.
Who would have ever thought that
I would be one of them?
My sister Doris was in an assistive
living home in Connecticut
near her daughter Kathy. She had
Alzheimer’s and one week before
all the residents were supposed
to be vaccinated, she contracted
Covid. Within three weeks she

died. During that time we were
unable to be with her.
However, when she was placed in
hospice we were able to FaceTime
with her. I spoke to her about many
good times we had together for so
many years and we laughed and
cried.
She was five years older than me
and we shared a bedroom when
we were children. She made me
wash my hands before we played
Monopoly. When I became
engaged, she made a party for me
in her backyard. I was her maid of
honor and she was mine.
Our families spent all of the holidays
together. She did Thanksgiving
and I did Passover. My husband
was her age so I was no longer the
kid sister. Once, her kids and mine

“How do you think the Pandemic
were running to make a train to go
to see a show in New York. She fell
down and sprained her ankle and
was unable to walk. The kids were
more upset about missing the show
than her ankle.
We went on trips together, sometimes
with our parents. On a cruise,
we all won the contest for the best
costumes: We were shipwrecks--We
were a captain, a pirate, a cook,
an entertainer, a passenger with
cold cream and curlers, and cargo
with rolls of toilet paper around
his neck. We built a cardboard row
boat and we all had paddles.
We bought a house near her in
Florida. Both our husbands died
and we were together until she had
to move up near her daughter. I was
devastated when she caught Covid.
How does one cope with loss?
For me, being able to go backwards
and have all my wonderful memories
to comfort me helped a lot,
especially being able to share them
with her before she passed. I have
lots of pictures that I treasure. I
love to write, and being able to put
my thoughts on paper is another
way of coping.
Going backwards has helped me
to go forward.
Going Backwards to Go Forward
has changed our society - negatively
and positively?”
