The Glen Oaks Library
BY LORRAINE BERTAN,
CULTURE CLUB
Why go to a library in
this age of e-books
and home computers
with internet access? Libraries
are community centers where
people of diverse backgrounds
and ages exchange knowledge
and ideas.
As described by Ms. Younshin
Kim, Community Library
Manager of the Queens Public
Library at Glen Oaks, the local
population age distribution is
25% ages 65 and older and
about 15% ages 85 and older.
Northeast Queens has a high
population of older adults. The
population of young children
in Glen Oaks is approximately
20%. How does the library
accommodate its programs
to the various populations it
serves? As described by Ms.
Kim, the focus of the Glen Oaks
Library is threefold:
• To serve active seniors, who
are highly involved in current
and cultural life.
• Reaching out to immigrants
who reflect a high concentration of
south Asian people.
• After-school programs for families
with children.
Ms. Kim joined the library in
2008 and the library opened in its
new building in 2013. Ms. Kim’s
degree is Master of Library and
Information Studies (MLIS) from
McGill University, Montreal. The
library has 10 full-time employees
and several part-time employees.
With a library card in your possession,
you can enjoy a number of
activities and learning experiences
at the Glen Oaks Library. Would
you like to learn more about water
color painting? Mr. Jack Adler, a
resident of North Shore Towers,
leads a club of 10-12 people who
enjoy the learning and social
experience provided by a teacher
who explores the techniques of
water color painting and enjoys
working with people of different
skills and backgrounds. What are
the requirements to join this club,
which meets on Mondays from
1:30PM – 3:00PM? Just your own
equipment and a library card!
Would you like to display your
own artwork and photographs at
the Glen Oaks “Hanging Gallery
Space?” Contact Anne Scotti,
Senior Librarian, at 718 -831-
