and a good hair dye...”
Nature can teach us about adaptability
and resilience. Early on this
sunny winter morning, I bundled up
and went out for a walking meditation
on our beautiful North Shore
Towers’ golf course, breathing in
the sights. The deciduous trees had
already let go of their leaves, becoming
lighter to weather winter. Rather
than just wait for harsh winds to
come along, they take an active part
in the shedding process – giving us
the gift of a glorious fall. I marvel
at the ways trees adapt: How they
grow roots that are strong enough
to stay firmly grounded throughout
the seasons. How they don’t
cling to their leaves, but rather let
go gracefully when it’s time. How
they remain standing with bare
branches against the cold of winter,
then try again after winter wanes.
How, reduced to almost nothing,
they still thrive. How they never
stop giving – shelter, fruit, wood,
adorning Earth in different ways
throughout their life cycle. So much
to learn...
Several years ago, I attended
a meditation workshop led by a
known meditation expert. In a
group meditation session focused
on imagery, to the sound of soft
yet evocative music, we were

This year marks the fifth anniversary of
Buffy and Angelo providing catering
services to all Towers on the Green
events. In appreciation of the many functions
held by North Shore Towers, they are going to
hold a special dinner celebration. This special
party will be hosted by Buffy and Angelo with
the assistance of Gloria Beck and Vicki Mazel.
This exciting evening will be capped off
with entertainment by Metropolitan Klezmer,
who will be performing “vibrant versions of
Yiddish melodies.” The group, founded in
1994, has recorded many albums, including
one that was selected as best album of
that year. Critics proclaim “their traditional
Klezmer is done with eclectic exuberance.”
Additionally, since this evening is proclaimed
“Club Appreciation Night” by the
hosts, members of affiliated North Shore
Towers clubs will receive a discount and pay
the special price of $39.95. All other residents
of North Shore Towers and non-club
members are welcome to join in the fun for
$44.95. An extensive buffet menu will feature
salad, main course choices, a carving station,
dessert and other goodies. Coffee, tea, and
soda are also included. A cash bar will also
be available.
A notice will be posted on the window of
the restaurant when sign-up dates begin. If
attendees are forming tables, please have your
checks in one envelope along with the names
of the people sitting with you.
Join in the festivities! Come and hear “one

most awe-inspiring beach we could
envision, watching the most glorious
sunrise our imagination could
inspire. “Imagine you are young and
openhearted, still responding to the
world with wonderment and awe,
still believing that anything is possible,”
the professor instructed us.
I tried, but soon realized that I was
enjoying the imagined scene on a
much deeper level while holding on
to whatever age I was at the time.
Ever since, when I practice this
specific meditation, the background
music I choose is Frank Sinatra’s
rendition of “Young at Heart” (and,
yes, sometimes I set the mood by
singing along...):
“Don’t you know that it’s
worth every treasure on earth
to be young at heart…”
Somehow, this song prompts a
mirroring response. My feelings
echo the familiar lyrics, which
induce a sense of well-being
most conducive to a relaxed state
of mind:
“For as rich as you are, it’s
much better by far to be young at
heart…”
Aging is such a privilege, and
appreciation of the gift of time
becomes more profound with age.
Let us make the best of whatever
age we are, keep on looking for the
silver lining, regardless, and follow
George Sand’s suggestion: “Try to
keep your soul young and quivering
right up to old age.” Yes, right
up to old age. And beyond...
