54 Below The world of New York nightlife was transformed when Studio 54, with its celebrity cliental and pulsating dance scene, opened its doors in l977. With Halston, Liza, Bianca, Andy and Cher gyrating to a disco beat, it quickly became the world’s most famous night club. Today, Studio 54 is no longer the boite for the Rich and Famous, seducing its patron with sex, drugs and rock, but is, instead, Feinstein’s 54 Below, an exquisite supper club with world class entertainment and superb food and drink. In a room deep below the streets of the theater district you will find a plush, lush and romantic. setting. Decorated with lots of red, purple and brown, shaded lamps and sexy lighting, there are banquets as well as tiny, round tables for two. No place could be more perfect for a proposal! 54 Below is one of the few supper clubs left in New York. It is the result of a creative alliance between the owners of the space and performer, singer, pianist and musical revivalist Michael Feinstein. Born in Columbus, Ohio, in l956, Mr. Feinstein first worked for Ira Gershwin, researching, cataloguing and preserving his work and that of his late brother George. He has since played many venues, including Carnegie Hall, and has received two Emmy Award and five Grammy nominations, as well as wining a Drama Desk award. He gives approximately l50 live performances a year and is the most passionate song stylist to be found anywhere. Michael Feinstein doesn’t sing a song… he makes love to it. There is a calendar of outstanding entertainment to start off the new year. Norm Lewis, the fabulous Christine Ebersole, Linda Eder, Melissa Manchester and Annaleigh Asford, among others will be performing. In addition, there will be a tribute to Amy Winehouse, a salute to Frank Sinatra and an evening of sensational Sondheim favorites. And every night there’s entertainment, whether established performers, tomorrow’s stars, Broadway composers, tributes to past greats and more. This is one theater that never goes dark! It’s hard to imagine incredible entertainment and terrific food under the same roof, but 54 Below delivers. The cocktails are unique and delicious, the salads crisp and the appetizers, especially the crab fritters, amazing. We loved the pan-seared artic char, but the braised short ribs were also fabulous. There is an extensive wine list, a grand assortment of cheese and excellent coffee. The hard partying crowd of the 70’s may be no longer, but those lucky enough to snare a table these days are having a marvelous time. With dynamic entertainment and excellent food make an evening at Feinstein’s 54 Below a New Year’s resolution. Feinstein’s 54 Below is located at 254 West 54th Street in Manhattan.
