MENS’ CLUB BY PAUL NETTLER The large card room was filled almost to capacity last January 12, as a most appreciative audience was transported back to its younger days via songs performed by The Lucky Tones and our own Carol Lawrence. Although we haven’t heard some of the songs in years, many in the audience still remembered the words as they sang along. Among the “Golden Oldies” were “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” “Paper Moon,” “The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” “Mister Sandman” and “Your Cheating Heart.” The Lucky Tones is a musical trio who perform vocals and play with two guitars and an upright bass. The Front Man, Jack McCarthy, plays the guitar, harmonica and provides the lead vocals. Steve Pappas plays the guitar, keyboard, and harmonica and provides backup and lead vocals. Nemo Vera plays the upright bass. Joan Lawrence has been living in North Shore Towers for the past eight years. She comes from a family of entertainers and has sung in Europe for the USO and with a number of big bands over many years. She loves to write jingles and songs and worked for the New York Yankees, for whom she wrote several songs when they won the World Series in 1977, 1978 and 1999. When she appeared on Channel 5 News, she was named the New York Yankees jingle writer. She now sings with her son, Russel Craig, who is an established singer, song writer, MC and Karaoke host. Our guest speaker at our February 9 meeting will be Saul Silas Fathi. Saul spoke to us once before, leaving us with an interesting message. His topic this time will be “Current International Affairs: A Comprehensive Discussion of the World’s Trouble Spots.” Coffee and cake will be served. Guests are welcome with a $5.00 fee, payable at the door. Fathi’s life story is most unusual. Having been born into a prominent Jewish family in Iraq, his knowledge is firsthand. At the age of 10, he and his younger brother were smuggled out of Baghdad and eventually reached Israel. He served in both the Israeli Air Force and the U.S. Army. He settled in the U.S., received his U.S. citizenship and received his BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia. He retired in 2003 from managing three hightech companies, which he founded, and began writing his memoirs. He now lives on Long Island with his wife Rachelle. Once again the participants in our Current Events Group on January 9 demonstrated their knowledge in a spirited discussion. Among the topics discussed were compromised security because of hacking, the dismantling of Obamacare, gerrymandering and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian problem. The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Coleridge Lounge. Ralph Edwards has some very interesting items on the agenda. On January 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the large card room, there will be a seminar on how to play Texas Hold ’em Poker, taught by our resident maven, Arnie Rabinowitz. No money will be involved. The event is open only to Men’s Club members. February’s events are highlighted by the Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 5, starting at 6 p.m. in the Coleridge Lounge. We are limited by the size of the room, so get your reservation in early. Food and drinks will be served. It’s free for all members. However, a $10.00 deposit is required, which will be returned when you attend. To make your reservation, please call Joe DiGiovanni at 516-965-9225. We had a great time last year and expect there to be no leftovers. On Thursday, February 23, we will be having lunch at the Azerbaijan Grill The cost is $20.00 a person and includes tax and tip. For information, call Jerry Siegel at 516-884-4001. And of course, we can’t forget Bingo on February 26 at 7:30 p.m.in the large card room. Guests are most welcome and there will be prizes. The other day we heard from our Chief Snow Bird in residence, Lee Hiller. It seems that they have two events scheduled so far in Florida. On February 17, a luncheon at the Boca Pointe Country Club is planned. They have been doing this for the past two years to everyone’s satisfaction. A sightseeing cruise on the Intracoastal will be held on March 6. The cruise is 2 hours long and a great way to view some beautiful homes and do a little schmoozing. If anybody is in, or will be in, the Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale area and would like to get together with your Men’s Club members, Lee would love to hear from you. His email address is lbhiller@gmail.com. Our informal breakfast get togethers are still attracting members. We meet at Buffy’s (Towers Restaurant) around 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Oatmeal, like mother used to make, is the most popular dish and Murray’s raisins are free as long as they last. If you would like to join the Men’s Club, please call Joe DiGiovanni at 516-965-9225. If you would like any additional information about our club’s activities, please call our President, Arnie Rabinowitz at 718-819-8070. Lucky Tones 24  NORTH SHORE TOWERS COURIER  ¢  February 2017
