Forty-five extraordinary individuals were lauded, including a pair of exceptional businesswomen from North Shore Towers, Pouran Eshghi, President of Pouran Salon & Spa; and Linda D. Rappaport, Vice President & Licensed Real Estate Broker, Charles H. Greenthal Property Sales. It was the eve of the new millennium when Vicki Schneps had an epiphany. The Publisher of the Queens Courier was attending a Queens Chamber of Commerce event honoring prominent business people in The Borough when something about the affair struck her. Not a single one of the award recipients was female. “Where were the powerful WOMEN of Queens?” she recalled thinking to the 45 women seated before her at the inaugural Long Island event. Schneps knew very well whereof she spoke. In the decade and a half since she began The Courier, the popular periodical had won dozens of awards and risen to become THE newspaper of Queens, and Schneps Communications had grown to become a publishing powerhouse. Thus was born “The Top Women in Business,” an annual celebration and recognition of prominent women in the World’s Borough. Within a few years the event had grown to encompass similar annual celebrations in Brooklyn and Staten Island. The December 3 gala was the first east of Queens, and if the more than 700 attendees were any indication, there would be many more to come. Schneps herself greeted the honorees upon their arrival. “You are here tonight because of the differences you have made in your business fields and the world we’re in,” she said. “We are so thrilled to bring our Power Women of Long Island event to you.” Each honoree was then given a moment to tell their stories. Many were entrepreneurs, building their businesses up from virtually nothing, like POWER COUPLE
