A SPIRITED DANCE
73RD ANNUAL SHINNECOCK INDIAN POWWOW RETURNS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Summer on Long Island would not be complete without the region’s largest
Native American powwow, where traditional tribal dancing, music, crafts, and
food aplenty will be available for the public to enjoy.
The Shinnecock Indian Powwow — one of the largest Native American
gatherings on the East Coast — features more than 100 vendors in addition
to the drumming and dancing in which participants compete for more than
$50,000 in cash prizes.
The event is the largest of three powwows on LI. The other two are the
Thunderbird American at the Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park
held in late July and the Paumanauke held in early August at Babylon Town
Hall in Lindenhurst.
Few local annual festivities compare to this equally inspiring, educational,
and entertaining event.
