CLOSING UP A YEAR We are reaching those last few weeks of 2014 and there is still a lot going on in Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside. Enjoy the holiday season with our stories of all the holiday celebrations going on in the western Queens neighborhoods. From high schoolers recording old time Christmas carols at one of Kaufman Astoria Studios’ renowned recording space to local holiday tree and street lightings, we’ve got you covered and are ready to deck the halls. In this last issue of the year, we continue with our detailed real estate coverage with reporter Liam La Guerre, who continues to keep us up to date with everything and anything real estate related in our neighborhoods. If it’s going up or down, Liam has it. This month he brings us updates on the Astoria Cove development, news of a brand new supermarket in LIC, and more upcoming projects. Make sure to check out his renderings, photographs and in-depth reporting. This month we are sad to report that longtime chair of Community Board 2, Joseph Conley, has stepped down from the position he has held for close to three decades. We wish him the best and can’t wait to work along the new chair of the board serving Sunnyside, LIC, Woodside and parts of Maspeth. We also bring you an interview with an Astoria band looking to combine folk tunes with a side of whiskey, a young inventor who was nationally recognized for her inventive plush toy line and a one-of-a-kind ukulele shop opening and looking to bring together ukulele enthusiasts. Also in this issue, our friend and LIC Courier writer Alan Capper is back with an article on a Long Island City auction house founded more than 30 years ago. The gallery includes a collection of modern and contemporary art including paintings, photographs and sculptures. Enjoy Capper’s interview with founder Robert Rogal and delve deeper into what an auction house is all about. With the holidays just around the corner, don’t forget to check out the LIC Flea Holiday Market. Every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 21, the indoor market will include a mix of LIC Flea favorite vendors with new faces offering local, handmade and uniquely curated items. Vendors will also be selling delicious treats and drinks. Shoppers will be able to fi nd something for everyone on their holiday list. Also, good ol’ Santa Claus has made his way to the market so make sure to come down and take your photo with Father Christmas. So stay warm and go exploring in these fi nal days left in 2014. Although the weather might be frightful at times, there is still a lot to fi nd and do around western Queens. Don’t forget to share your fi ndings with us, and send your ideas and feedback to our editor Angy Altamirano. We wish you a happy, prosperous and joyous New Year. ■LETTER FROM PUBLISHER
