■ART CALENDAR MoMA PS1 Gregory Crewdson Untitled beckoning busdriver 2001 52 NOVEMBER 2015 i LIC COURIER i www.qns.com 22-25 Jackson Ave. (718) 784-2084 “Sunday Sessions” On view Nov. 22 Collaborators since 2010, acclaimed sound experimentalist Florian Hecker and multidisciplinary artist Mark Leckey are both interested in the exploration of sound and its material effects. Hecker Leckey Sound Voice Chimera brings together two discrete solo works to form a mutant configuration in which Hecker decomposes, modulates, and re-synthesizes the vocal track from Leckey’s 2010 performance piece GreenScreenRefrigeratorAction and Hecker’s own 3 Channel Chronics installation from that same year. MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE 36-01 35th Ave (718) 777-6800 “Lonely Places: Film Noir and the American Landscape” On view through Dec. 20 Film noir is often thought of as inseparable from the city—dark, claustrophobic, labyrinthine. But noir films are also set in small towns and suburbs, in desolate landscapes, on the open road or even at sea. Drawing on American film noir from 1945 to 1960, this series surveys a variety of settings from technicolor deserts to snowy mountains, freeways to Southern swamps. Regardless of the locale, all roads lead through the ultimate noir landscape: the mind, which is the darkest city of all. SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK 32-01 Vernon Blvd. (718) 956-1819 “Broadway Billboard” On view through March 13 Socrates’ latest “Broadway Billboard” is by artist Duke Riley and is titled El Primero Desfile de San Patricio en la Habana, Cuba, or, The First St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Havana, Cuba. Like the first parades in America, Riley’s St. Patrick’s Day performance reminded participants of the positive potentials of social inclusion and cultural exchange from the earliest parades and commemorations. Riley’s 2009 parade displayed a romanticized vision of a distant land – Ireland, Cuba, and America – separated by the sea. With today’s warming of relations between historically cool American and Cuban governments, El Primero Desfile de San Patricio en la Habana, Cuba presciently experiments with the merging of the two cultures. FISHER LANDAU CENTER FOR ART 38-27 30th St. (718) 937-0727 “Altered Appearances” On view through Jan. 4 “Altered Appearances” documents the trend of manipulation in fine art photography in the span of 30 years. Artwork from Gregory Crewdson, Felix Gonzalez- Torres, Matthew Barney and Lyn Davis will be on display. NOV Annette Lemieux Things to walk away with
