To start off for this month’s cover, we are excited to report Citi Bike, after about three years of ups and downs, has finally launched in Long Island City and this is only the beginning. After installing stations throughout Brooklyn, the process to bring the blue bikes to more neighborhoods- including Astoria – will begin. To celebrate its expansion, Citi Bike is offering $25 off for new members through Aug. 31. So, we encourage all of you to go out, put on your helmets, hop on a bike and safely explore! One of the 12 stations which have arrived in Long Island City is found on 46th Avenue and 5th Street in front of the popular LIC Flea & Food. Whether you are looking for that perfect item or looking to satisfy your taste buds, the Flea is the place to be. The market’s Beer Garden is the only venue exclusively selling beers from all Queens breweries and it’s the perfect spot to quench your thirst. So grab your family and friends and make sure to make the market, which is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., your next weekend destination. In this month’s issue we bring you the news of the LIC business improvement district looking to expand its coverage area in hopes of helping a larger portion of Long Island City become more inviting and attractive. It will take some time, but with the community’s support it will definitely be a great thing for the booming neighborhood. We also bring you the story of a local Long Island City resident who is taking her love for the borough of Queens and starting her own tour company. She will start with touring around the area she calls home but she hopes, that as she continues to learn more about the “World’s Borough,” she will be able to expand her company. Other stories in this issue include a ‘retro-futuristic’ coffee and dessert café opening its doors, a popular trivia game show beginning its residency at an Astoria venue, and the start of a transformation that looks to turn the “Boulevard of Death” into the “Boulevard of Life.” Don’t forget to share your news with us, and send your ideas and feedback to our editor Angy Altamirano at [email protected]. We are looking for unique people, stories and happenings in the community. We hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer, take a trip to the LIC waterfront, and kayak from the Anable Basin at the foot of the LIC Flea. We’ll see you next month when we welcome a new season.
