■SUNNYSIDE SHINES Summertime fun in Sunnyside August is a great time to visit Sunnyside! On Aug. 8 the neighborhood celebrated the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert, part of the Sunnyside Summer Strolls event series, which is open to the community and features popular programming each year. This event took place on 46th Street underneath the famous Sunnyside Arch, just across the street from the 46th/Bliss Street station on the 7 line. Named for famous jazz musician Bix Beiderbecke, who lived in Sunnyside in the 1920s, the annual concert brings jazz performance to the street, complete with a dance floor to test out your moves. This year’s concert featured music from the Sunnyside Social Club, Sunnyside Wolverines, Street Beat Brass Band and the Sunnyside Drum Corps. Preceding the jazz concert was a brief street renaming ceremony for Luke Adams at the corner of 46th Street and Queens Boulevard. Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer will lead the Sunnyside Drum Corps in honoring the local man who helped create the Sunnyside Arch. Third Thursdays Sunnyside Shines’ “Third Thursdays in Bliss Plaza” series continues in August with an hour-long performance by Dilemastronauta at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. This band, whose name is a play on “The Astronaut’s Dilemma,” will perform original music inspired by the rhythms of Colombia. The music series takes place under the 7 train station at 46th Street and runs through October. Restaurant Week It may only be August, but Queens is already looking forward to Restaurant Week 2015 in October. This year, the dates are October 19 to 23 (Monday through Friday). Sunnyside Shines is soliciting interest from restaurants that are willing to offer a minimum threecourse dinner for $25, consisting of an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert. Restaurants may still offer their normal menu during this week in addition to their Restaurant Week menu. Sunnyside Shines is also looking for a limited number of participating sites to agree to host a major art installation inside the restaurant, which will be curated by the arts organization No Longer Empty. Interested eateries should email [email protected].
