MadeinQNS, a pop-up shop in Long Island City, is bringing these entrepreneurs and business owners together to make it easier for them to sell their products and spread the word to locals about the interesting and innovative products being made right in there neighborhoods. Personalized leather bags, natural hot sauce and silk ties are just some of the things people can purchase at MadeinQNS. In this issue, we also highlight a proposal to transform an abandoned rail line in Long Island City into a wildlife sanctuary complete with bug hotels, bat caves, bird houses and native plants. We showcase an Astoria resident’s stunning aerial photography that he shot using a drone. The photographs capture the Hell Gate Bridge and the East River during sunset. A new restaurant in Astoria called Flattopps, which stems from the owners of Queens Comfort, features a hip-hop theme and includes a burger named after rapper Gucci Mane. Breadbox Cafe in Long Island City expanded its offerings to include a full-service menu offering heartier dishes like fire-roasted eggplant and tahini, Moroccan beef cigars and shrimp moussaka. This month’s issue also profiles an Astoria resident making floral arrangements and glass terrariums at her design shop. Liza Fiorentinos is the mastermind behind each creations and also offers classes for those who want to make their own terrariums. The new Citywide Ferry Service, which will connect Astoria to Manhattan, will include several amenities such as heated decks, storage for bikes and charging outlets for phones.
