Mixing It Up BY SASHA POGREBINSKY DAY STRAWBERRY COOLER Biking through the country in Long Island last week I picked up some amazing strawberries. You know, those little strawberries you see in Farmer’s Markets in early summer. They are very small, but pack a huge flavor punch. I can easily devour an entire quart in a few minutes, but to make the flavor last I put the berries in an icy punch, which is great for those easy summer evenings when the sunsets are pink and the drinks are, too. This recipe is “slushy” meets “wine cooler” but of course there is a rum kick to give it that extra edge. It’s easy to make and is a huge hit, and it pairs well with a light summer dinner or grilled fish. Stock the Bar 1 bottle of Rose wine – choose a label or brand you like, but a nice dry rose works best for this recipe. 4 oz white rum 1 quart day strawberries ( or any strawberries) 1 oz honey Fresh mint and strawberries for garnish 1 quart ice Tools: Blender Directions: Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high to make a “slushy.” Add more honey or even sugar if you like it really sweet. Pour the contents into a chilled pitcher and serve in stemmed glassware so the drink stays cool in your hands. Garnish with fresh mint and fresh strawberries. SASHA POGREBINSKY Cheers!
