Orestes' LIC BY ORESTES GONZALEZ Editor’s note: Orestes Gonzalez is an architect, photographer, writer and resident of LIC since 1989. He has been taking photographs for over 25 years, traveling to over 40 countries and documenting what has become the overriding theme in his photography – man’s intrinsic need for leaving a mark and the different paths to achieving it. His column, “Orestes’ LIC”, will concentrate on showing snippets of life around the areas we live in. A local record keeper, if you will. I initially set off wanting to capture the floats, the marching bands and the varied groups parading going down 5th Avenue, showing the diversity of all who participated. But what I really found powerful was the more personal photos I did of the couples who were there. They connected me to the victims of Orlando and made this photo essay all the more poignant. It was people like these: happy, young individuals pursuing their personal freedoms, who were gunned down that fateful evening. I dedicate this series to them and the loved ones left behind.
