For this month’s front cover we talked with the lead singer of Astoria’s own Distoria. There might only be three people in the group, but when audiences listen to their music many would think there are more members in the band. Their electric beats bring a new sound into the industry and we can’t wait to see them “go big.” After recovering from the Fourth of July crowds at the LIC Flea & Food and Beer Garden, unique vendors have been added both in the food aisles and vintage rows. Whether you are looking for that perfect item or looking to satisfy your taste buds, the LIC Flea is the place to be. The Beer Garden offers selections from Queens breweries and is now introducing “Meet the Makers” of the beers . So make sure to make the market, which is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., your next weekend destination. For this month we bring you the news of the pursuit to test the viability of the city’s water for New York City’s first ever floating pool. It will still take some time but we are happy to report that the waterfront neighborhoods of Long Island City and Astoria are being considered. We will keep you updated on this story. We also bring you an inside look at a prop rental company in LIC which has rented props for shows such as ““Girls,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU,” Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” and blockbuster films like “A Beautiful Mind,” “Big,” “Carlito’s Way,” and “Ghostbusters.” They hope to soon offer tours for the community, but in the meantime take a look at all our photos! Other stories in this issue include an Astoria Ghost Tour, improvements to a dangerous Astoria intersection, and Fran Drescher, mostly known as The Nanny, making her way back to Queens. Don’t forget to share your news with us, and send your ideas and feedback to our editor Angy Altamirano at [email protected]. We are looking for unique people, stories and happenings in the community. We hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer, take a trip to the LIC waterfront, and kayak from the Anable Basin at the foot of the LIC Flea. Explore your neighborhoods, they are changing every week.
