Art Calendar June SCULPTURECENTER 44-19 Purves St. 718-361-1750 “Teresa Burga: Mano Mal Dibujada” On view through July 31 Teresa Burga’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States presents works dating from the 1960s to today. Burga was an active figure in the avant-garde art scene in Lima, Peru, which was effectively shut down under the political regime of the 1970s. The title of Burga’s exhibition comes from a series of drawings previously shown in the group exhibition at SculptureCenter in 2014, Puddle, Pothole, Portal. The drawings were of a “badly drawn hand,” a proposal for a series of metal sculptures of the artist’s hand in different positions. Since then, Burga has completed the series of 9 sculptures proposed in her earlier drawings, which are presented for the first time in their entirety at SculptureCenter. MOMA PS1 22-25 Jackson Ave. 718-777-6888 “Tomáš Rafa: New Nationalisms” On view through Sept. 10 MoMA PS1 presents Tomáš Rafa: New Nationalisms, an exhibition featuring the work of the Slovakian artist and documentary filmmaker. Since 2009, Rafa (b. Žilina, 1979) has employed the methods of cinéma vérité to document what he refers to as “new nationalisms” across Central Europe, creating vivid, stirring portraits of the resurgence of extreme right-wing, xenophobic, and neofascist groups in the region. MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE 36-01 35th Ave. 718-777-6888 “The GIF Elevator” On view through July 30 The GIF has become the subject of an unlikely series of reinventions since its introduction in 1987 as a data format. Today the GIF is an important site of cultural and artistic expression, an established and pervasive moving image form defined in part by silence, brevity, shareability, and most importantly, the loop. The GIF Elevator features newly commissioned GIFs by six artists, animators, and illustrators who represent some of the most important and influential GIF makers working today: Mr. Div (Matt DiVito), Dain Fagerholm, Render Fruit (Clara Luzian), Lorna Mills, Paul Robertson, and Rafia Santana. Their practices represent a sample of the extraordinary breadth and diversity of the contemporary GIF. Each artist will create four original GIFs that will be presented on the walls and ceiling of the Museum’s elevator, an exhibition environment that offers a unique and intimate encounter with the work. Each installation will be on view for two months. 52 JUNE 2017 I LIC COURIER I www.qns.com
