Community News Explosions in the Sky BY ANGELA MATUA [email protected] 18 JUNE 2017 I LIC COURIER I www.qns.com Queens residents will once again get the best view for the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks as the display is headed back to the East River this year. Last year, the fireworks show included more than 45,000 pyrotechnic shells during a 25-minute synchronized display and artist Meghan Trainor visited Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City to perform songs during a live broadcast. Similar to last year’s schedule, a live broadcast will start at 8 p.m. on NBC, where artists will perform along the waterfront. A spokesperson for Macy’s said the performers will be announced in the next two weeks. The fireworks will begin at 9:25 p.m. “As the nation’s premiere Independence Day show, Macy’s Fireworks create an unparalleled and patriotic event that captivates viewers in New York City and around the country,” said Susan Tercero, group vice president, Macy’s Branded Entertainment. “Intricately synchronized to a rousing and uplifting score featuring the West Point Band and Glee Club, the display will be filled with magical, aweinspiring effects that will enthrall and delight millions of spectators celebrating our nation’s birthday.” This year’s display includes more than 60,000 effects and will be launched from five barges. Pyro Spectaculars by Souza will create the pyrotechnics that will feature new shells including color changing chrysanthemums, purple crackling ghost peonies, orange bees and pulsing happy faces in 23 colors including fuchsia, lemon and aqua. During the display, a musical score will be played that includes an opening from opera singer Jamie Burton, country singer Craig Campbell, who will sing “American Anthem” and Tony and Grammy-Award winner Heather Headley will sing Elvis Presley’s hit “If I Can Dream.” The USO Show Troupe and members of the West Point Band will also perform. According to the 108th precinct, there will be no parking from 44th Drive to 54th Avenue from July 3 at 10 p.m. to July 4 at 11 p.m. This “frozen zone” includes all side streets as well. All vehicles parked at that time will be towed and you can call the 108th Precinct at 718-784-5411 with any questions.
