The Bernsteins, who run their original location in New Rochelle, opened their Long Island City store four years ago. “It’s growing with the area,” said Bernstein. “We have been able to watch the neighborhood grow. We started from the bottom and tried to grow with it.” When asked what he enjoys the most about operating a dry-cleaning business, the younger Bernstein said, “I like meeting new people, making new contacts, giving great customer service and knowing that people are coming back because of the quality service we offer. I like knowing that we’re making somebody’s life easier by offering these services.” Located at 4-75 48th Avenue, Absolute Cleaners offers leather and suede cleaning and replenishing, tailoring, wash and fold, cleaning and preservation of wedding gowns, hand finished shirt pressing, and more. LONG ISLAND CITY ACADEMY OF MUSIC: Photo Courtesy of Long Island City Academy of Music www.queenscourier.com I LIC COURIER I JUNE 2013 BY JOHANN HAMILTON Rarely can one find a greater example of a man following his dreams than at the Long Island City Academy of Music (LICAM). Three years ago, Oliver Sohngen founded LICAM, and today it stands as one of the finest locations in New York to not only learn how to play music, but learn about it as well. In his own words, LICAM’s mission is to “offer the highest quality musical instruction at affordable prices.” An avid musician and musical instructor for the past 25 years, Sohngen built LICAM from the ground up, and takes great personal interest in virtually every project the Academy undertakes. Whether it be interviewing students of all ages personally to figure out what classes they best fit, or hand-picking his award-winning staff, LICAM truly is a testament to what can be accomplished when people love what they do and dream of sharing that gift with the world. “What’s great about our staff is that our teachers are often highly distinguished performers as well,” said Sohngen. “This way the students can look up to them not only as teachers but as role models, and know that what they’re learning can really be put to use, should they choose to do so.” LICAM offers mostly one-on-one classes in order to place the greatest focus possible on the students, although there are also group classes such as choir and opera. The Academy is also active in the community, providing services such as an after-school class at P.S. 49. “We have the best teachers in New York,” Sohngen said proudly. “Whether you are a beginner or advanced, it doesn’t matter. We cater to all of our students, and our students have gone on to study at places like the Manhattan School of Music and perform at Carnegie Hall.” What is special about LICAM is the level of professionalism and personal interest each member of the staff brings to what they do. In a city teeming with people, it distinguishes itself by going the extra mile to make each student feel comfortable, and impart to them dozens of combined years of musical excellence. LICAM is located at 44-02 23rd Street, 2nd floor, Suite 203 and 205 in Long Island City.
