FROM THE EDITOR
Hello, LIC Courier readers!
My name is Katrina Medoff, and this month, I am excited
to be filling in as the interim editor-in-chief of the LIC Courier.
Angela Matua, who served as the magazine’s editor for 2 ½
years, has accepted a new position as marketing and commu-nications
coordinator for Children’s Aid.
“I’ve had so much fun covering the neighborhoods of Long
Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside,” she said. “I want to thank all
of my contributors, business owners, artists and residents who
have shared their stories with me to make this magazine special.”
Thank you, Angela, for your dedication to bringing the latest
neighborhood news to its residents during your time at the
magazine. Congratulations on this next step in your career!
I am also pleased to announce the newest editor-in-chief of
the LIC Courier, Jenna Bagcal. She comes to us from CUNY
Graduate School of Journalism and will be taking over with next
month’s issue.
“As someone who recognizes the importance of covering local
and hyperlocal news, I’m thrilled to be joining the LIC Courier,”
she said. “I look forward to learning more about western Queens
and the people who live there.”
Jenna, best of luck in this new position!
I am the permanent editor-in-chief of the LIC Courier’s sister
publication, BORO Magazine, which covers the neighborhoods
of Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside. You can pick up a
copy of BORO on the streets of western Queens and connect
with us on Instagram (@boromagazine), Facebook (facebook.
com/boromag) and Twitter (@BOROMAG).
This month in the LIC Courier, we’re highlighting several artistic
contributions that are enriching our community. An adorable short
film about a lonely avocado roaming the streets of Astoria looking
for something to fill its pit has been accepted to more than 30
festivals thus far (page 18). There’s a “docu-poem” about the
Blissville neighborhood in Long Island City featuring almost three
decades’ worth of footage from the area (page 28). And you’ll
be amazed by the colorful way a Chinese artist has transformed
the blank walls of his LIC studio (page 34).
As always, we feature the latest in real estate, food, community
news and events in western Queens.
If you have any tips or news you would like to share with
us, reach out to me at katrina@boromag.com or the upcoming
editor-in-chief at jbagcal@qns.com.
