“Projects 108: Gauri Gill”
On view April 15 through Sept. 3
Indian artist Gauri Gill focuses on members of an Adivasi
community in Maharashtra, India. The members of this community
are known for their papier-mâché objects, most notably their
traditional sacred masks. Gill’s photography depicts their everyday
lives in these ornate masks. The imagery of the body of work,
entitled “Acts of Appearance,” is both realistic and dreamlike. “Acts
of Appearance” and Gill’s “Notes from the Desert” are presented
alongside each other to show the parallels and differences.

“Miya Ando: Clouds”
On view April 25 through Aug. 19
“Miya Ando: Clouds” depicts clouds in glass cubes and slabs,
inspired by artist Miya Ando’s upbringing in Okayama, Japan
and coastal Northern California. The pairing of her clouds
with Noguchi’s sculptures from the “Akari: Sculpture by Other
Means” exhibit was inspired by a Zen phrase: “Blue mountain
does not move. White cloud comes and goes naturally.” The
surface of the glass appears to move because it mirrors the
environment.
