MAKING MOVES Western Queens is home to a growing number of entreprenuers and this issue is highlighting some of these leaders and what they are bringing to the community. For our cover story, we spoke to Carrie White, a Georgia native who moved to New York 11 years ago and is now the founder of a popular film studio in Long Island City. GUM studios is attracting filmmakers, musicians and retail clients. Celebrities who have filmed at GUM studios include Alicia Silverstone, Morgan Freeman, Alec Baldwin and Katie Couric. The large space also features a green screen and White partners with local high schoolers to provide them with studio internships. David Torchiano, an Astoria resident, and his partner Josh Arak love sushi. They began hosting pop-up supper clubs in their apartments in 2012 and about two years ago expanded to a winery in Brooklyn. Torchiano and Arak began doing some research two years agoand found a lot of the fish used for sushi such as tuna and salmon was not raised and caught in sustainable ways. Now, the duo only offers sustainable and local fish such as artic char and amberjack. Beginning in May, they will bring their pop-up restaurant and ideals to Long Island City’s Resobox. Chef Scottish Francis is probably best known for his appearance on Masterchef. He is also the owner of Gossip Coffee in Astoria where he serves creative donut combinations such as orange creamsicle, prosciutto guinness and lemon poppyseed. The chef was prononounced the Donut King by none other than Gordon Ramsey. Francis also has other food offerings planned for the future so make sure to check out Gossip Coffee. In other news, the beloved Pepsi-Cola sign at Gantry Park has officially been designated a New York City landmark. Now that warm weather is on the horizon, we have a list of free concerts coming up and we outline a number of improvements coming to parks and schools thanks to participatory budgeting. As always, the issue is filled with the latest real estate news and interesting events taking place throughout the month.
