Orestes' LIC BY ORESTES GONZALEZ This scene is from La Habana Vieja (Old Havana). This part of the city dates back to the 16th century and has some of Havana’s oldest buildings. The two uniformed girls in the picture are headed to the Jose Antonio Machado Primary School. A former colonial residence, the building was repurposed as a school in the 1960’s. At the end of the street is the side view of the Cathedral of Havana, built in the late 1500’s. Styled in a Late Baroque style popular of the era, it is one of Havana’s most popular tourist sites. The narrow streets and condensed colonial architecture has made this area of Havana a UNESCO World Heritage Site.I will be posting more images of my month long visit to the island of Cuba on my website and blog very soon. Editor’s note: Orestes Gonzalez is an architect, photographer, writer and resident of LIC since 1989. He has been taking photographs for over 25 years, traveling to over 40 countries and documenting what has become the overriding theme in his photography – man’s intrinsic need for leaving a mark and the different paths to achieving it. His column, “Orestes’ LIC”, will concentrate on showing snippets of life around the areas we live in. A local record keeper, if you will.
