Before sharing with you what we have inside this month’s issue, we want to continue sending our best wishes for a speedy and healthy recovery to our friend Alan Capper, one of the LIC Courier’s writers. He is doing much better and we can’t wait to have him back and sharing his interviews with the community starting next month. For our front cover we have the beautiful work of artist Luba Lukova. She is one of the many artists who will be showcasing their work during the 2014 LIC Arts Open. If you have not gotten out to check out the festival, make sure to stop at one of the venues throughout the week. Check out the colorful map on pages 30 and 31, which depicts Long Island City with great detail and color. In this issue we thank the Department of Transportation for setting up Slow Zones in two of the most dangerous streets in the borough, Northern and Queens boulevards. We hope this new step, part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative, will put an end to traffic fatalities. This month we also welcome new trees in Astoria Park, a softball league looking to connect its players beyond the field, and public plazas coming to Sunnyside. Take a look at Astoria’s inaugural Battle of the Beards, where one face fuzz was crowned the best of the night. We celebrate the grand opening of the Astoria Flea & Food at Kaufman Astoria Studios, which saw thousands of visitors on its first day. The market will operate from the studios’ outdoor lot, the first of its kind in the city, every Sunday for a total of eight consecutive weeks. Visitors of all ages and from all over the city will be able to enjoy the best in food vendors, antiques, collectibles, art, crafts, fashion and much more. LIC Flea & Food will continue opened from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the outdoor lot located at 5th Street and 46th Avenue. So do not forget to make the Astoria Flea and LIC Flea your next weekend destination with family and friends. The days are getting longer so you have more time to go out and enjoy everything your neighborhoods have to offer. Get out and enjoy some sun, and don’t forget to keep sending us your feedback and ideas. Have a happy May and we will see you in the summer!
